'WASHINGTON — As Congress has debated energy policy over the past several days, an unusual argument keeps surfacing in support of drilling off the U.S. coastline and in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Why, ask some Republicans, should the United States be thwarted from drilling in its own territory when just 50 miles off the Florida coastline the Chinese government is drilling for oil under Cuban leases?

Yet no one can prove that the Chinese are drilling anywhere off Cuba's shoreline. The China-Cuba connection is "akin to urban legend," said Sen. Mel Martinez, a Republican from Florida who opposes drilling off the coast of his state but who backs exploration in ANWR.

"China is not drilling in Cuba's Gulf of Mexico waters, period," said Jorge Pinon, an energy fellow with the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami and an expert in oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. Martinez cited Pinon's research when he took to the Senate floor Wednesday to set the record straight.

I try to avoid products from China as much as I can so this doesn't concern me much. However, they are mostly blowing smoke. Their economy depends on US consumers buying their crap. We can buy crap from other places.

Graphics, Re; Cuban oil leases. Your links and the stuff I recall on China/Cuba drilling were all 'news' in 2006. As of 2008 till now nada is going on there that I have heard of. Not that it can't happen and oil off-shore tract leasing is another form of gambling anyway, drilling or no drilling. I would guess if anyone does it for Cuba it would be Brazil as they have newly gained deep well drilling equipment and some know how. They are much closer too as far as moving big rigs.

It has been pretty much discredited as anti anti-propaganda during the ANWR drilling debates. It seems to have been exaggerated by the pro-drillers of which I is one. Ditto with Florida drilling too. It will be accessed eventually so it's like money in the bank so to speak.

I haven't heard how the left's new alternate fuel is coming along we heard so much about a few years ago. I wonder where that unicorn fart blew off too now that they are driving the big bus?

Phil, The Cuba Headlines is from June of 09. Saudi Gazette is from 08

And yes I am a proponent of offshore drilling. Drill here. Drill NOW!

Not much new here...except that you will soon be learning Chinese if you want a low paying job in one of their new American slaveshops....errr, I mean factories. Fat Cats love cheap labor....always have...that is why they convince their pimps that Unions are so dangerous....and they are......dangerous to Fat Cats. Pimps work hard to convince that earning a decent wage is "Socialism".....I never bought into that idea, and just being a lowly plumber, made more in a week than some of those pimps made in a month....but what do I know...right? I know my bank account(s) look pretty sweet on these cold winter days of retirement...no thanks to Fat Cats.

China threatens sanctions if anyone sends Taiwan a *greeting card* where someone can see it.

A good question might be if America would really defend Taiwan in a crisis situation? I think the time is nearing when China thinks the answer is No...and our ability to defend them is currently in doubt as well. Beyond going nuclear, we are pretty well thinned out and used up in our Military, thanks to Jesus George and his Great Adventures in failed foreign policies. China will eventually make the grab.......then the world will see what is left of American Might. How many Fat Cats are going to stand by and let us nuke their precious Chinese operations.....I'm betting none.
Regards!

No, America would not defend Taiwan against China, even if we had the ability.

Remember about 2.5 years ago when nuclear triggers were mistakenly sent to Taiwan? China was very quite regarding Taiwan until well after the 2008 Presidential election. I always found it interesting that anyone would know about the triggers to even know a mistake was made.

Speaking of conspiracy theories.

Why would China want anyone to think how much we were *really* in hock to them after eight years of Bush *before* that election?

They were quiet about Taiwan cause they wanted 'more of the same.' Now, they need to flex a little.

They don't *want* Taiwan, they just have a pride thing about it. They'll play that once in a while, especially when their currency-monkeying is working and they feel neglected, but... They can't take it intact and couldn't hold it. They know it. This is highly-feudal with bigger toys. Occasionally a tool for the finance, but...

Militarily, Forget about it. It's strategically almost-irrelevant. They could make a paste of Taiwan before CNN even picked up the story.

It's old stuff and a chip. Feudal. Stuff.

One thing that mystifies me about my fellow Americans is that we just *can't* seem too see that we're not the *only* ones who do things for how it plays to the home audience.

That's how we were totally unable to see why Saddam had to make it look like he maybe still had WMDs. This is why Bush with his *thing* totally destablilized the balance there. Even if you were the most crass imperialist, with the worst intentions ever, one should see that *Saddam* was *leverage.*

Nothing "conspiracy" about it.

Nuclear Parts Sent To Taiwan In Error - washingtonpost.com

QuoteQuote:
The Defense Department mistakenly shipped secret nuclear missile fuses to Taiwan more than 18 months ago and did not learn that the items were missing until late last week, Pentagon officials acknowledged yesterday, deepening concerns about the security of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Officials with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) sent four nose-cone fuse assemblies to Taiwan in August 2006 instead of four replacement battery packs for use in Taiwan's fleet of UH-1 Huey helicopters. The fuses help trigger nuclear warheads on Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles as they near their point of impact. It was unclear yesterday how the two very different items were mixed up at a warehouse at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and how they were shipped out of the country without notice.

. . .Gates learned of the erroneous shipment on Friday and informed President Bush, but officials waited until yesterday -- after Saturday's elections in Taiwan -- to disclose the incident. Pentagon and State Department officials have conferred with Taiwanese and Chinese diplomats over the past three days. . . .

That's actually not the same as 'nuclear codes,' for one thing?

For another, even if bad guys got a hold of such fuses, there's more to making an A-bomb than sticking a 'fuse' in a bunch of uranium?

Not something to leave lying around, or shipped wrong, but, also not really about China's motives regarding Taiwan. Say em in the same sentence and you might get a reaction, though.

(it's still about posturing, though. Kind of like Tibet, only with factories.)
