Essential Item for your Camera Bag

In addition to the normal collection of photographic flotsam, add a simple compass/gps and a flashlight:

I don't go anywhere without a source of fire, at least a rudimentary compass, something with a cutting edge, and a distress whistle. You never know when you might get cornered.

I don't know about what's available in Germany but in most of the US, a cellphone would have been all that was needed to avoid a night on the ice. A little common sense also. My camera backpack has a compass, swiss army knife, and matches always with it. I've never had to use them in a survival situation but they can come in handy sometimes.

I always carry 4 large thick ziplock freezer bags, along with GPS, swiss army knife & matches.
