who's a better bridge builder?

who's side are you on?

This secretive billionaire family owns the Ambassador Bridge - thestar.com

i find this interesting, as they say.. money talks

"
Canada has another solution. For 10 years, Ottawa has worked with Washington and with the Ontario and Michigan governments on the DRIC (Detroit River International Crossing), a far more expensive bridge that would rise 3 kilometres downriver from the Ambassador.

Unlike the Morouns, the governments have gone about the job crossing every "t" and dotting every "i". Most of the money is already committed for next-century customs plazas and new highway links to the 401 and U.S. interstates. The lone remaining wild card is the Michigan legislature, which has yet to sign off on its $200 million stake.

What Canada and the U.S. backers fear is that the Morouns will employ wolverine business acumen to buy every vote needed in the legislature to stop the public project.

The Moroun firm, already well known for its litigious ways, may simply jam courtrooms with so much paper that nothing can happen until a new and friendlier crop of Michigan politicians takes power to kill the DRIC altogether.

..

"In Detroit, Moroun supporters have had some success in portraying the Canadians as bullies," the source told the Star. "The irony is that the Canadian government is forbidden from hiring lobbyists, so we can't fight back the way the Morouns can.
"

personally i find this rather evil, if the customer is always right (in a free market economy), then why is the customer (public) being shoved into a dark room and have cement poured over their heads by the people with cash coming out of their butt hole?

they claim that they are the better bridge operators (no doubt, so many years in experience), but when it comes to cross border logistics, it would seem that a joint effort between the two governments involved would be a better solution than having a 3rd party intermediary

the Windsor traffic argument also makes sense..

its a tought call for sure, as always, i am more for government control, at least you can rally against the government...

I'm not familiar witht he Morouns, although I am well acquainted with plenty of morons...just the plain common variety.
The answere is really quite simple...if they have enough money they will win. In America, you no longer need the people's approval for your goals, you simply buy the legislation you want...or don't want. If you have enough money, nothing else is required. Is it ALL about the money...yep, evey bit of it...from your local Coffee Shop to your Senators hip pocket...it is all about the money.
Regards!

Yeah, he seems to have iron control over this issue. It's been going on for years.
It really can become a mess on the Detroit side, at both the tunnel and the bridge,as neither has a direct link to an interstate. Close but no cigar.
I've seen the Windsor side backup too, but at least the road on that side is well maintained and in a direct line to the bridge. The tunnel is another story, as it lets out to downtown roads on both sides.

Did the article in the Star mention that he has been told to close one of his ammex ( duty free) stores on the bridge approach, in order to improve the ramps?

That should rot his socks. those things are profitable.

Here's a shot of the bridge from Belle Isle.
The lumps on the bridge are semis waiting to get into the US.
It's the busiest international crossing in the world.

And some folks think Detroit doesn't matter

This does remind me of the famous (down here) failed Trans Texas Corridor project. The planners are gone...for now...but they learned that hey didn't spread around enough cash in the Legislature and with the new Supreme ruling allowing Corporate spending in unlimited amounts...from anywhere in the world....they will be back sooner than later. Soon we will not need wars....if the Taliban and China want America...they will simply buy it. I hear that Opium trade is very lucrative....when they get enough cash together, they will just vote themselves some new American leaders. It appears China already has.....
