The weird thing is every time that I've actually given a discount I've gotten burned in the end
When I've refused to drop my prices they've always been happy to pay and given nice tips
Any idea why I refuse to give discounts now?
I used to own a store that specialized in bass fishing tackle.
Guys would pull up with their 40k boats being pulled by their 40k pickups and try to whip my ass over a .25 cent soft plastic bait.
Strange.
It's a fine line - you don't want to set up a precedent if this a customer you do occasional business with and your prices are competitive to begin with. You want to keep them, but you don't want to cut your throat either.

with customers like that I don't mention any discount, however I give them a small break when they're paying.
When people try and talk me down on a price more than what I am willing to come down I ask them if they think it is overpriced. Generally they answer sheepishly with "no". If they say yes I ask them how much it should sell for and if they give me a figure I'll ask them what they are basing that on. That usually ends the haggling.
