WINDOWS DOES NOT CRASH, all it takes is a little diligence and a restraint from horseporn on behalf of the user.

if your windows crashes, that means you either have a hardware problem (either insufficient cooling or a defective component) or that you are a complete compunoob and have clicked on every single pop up that came your way, and have 20 different "anti-spyware" programs running in the background, filling your crevasse with more shit until your computer turns into a cesspool of corrupt files, malware and viruses.
This is wrong on so, so many levels. Completely factually incorrect and dead wrong. Windows crashes all the time, whether it crashes itself or applications. Installing/updating applications fills up the registry with so much crap, eventually stuff that contradicts itself gets stored in there and causes random crashes of certain applications. Viruses and other malware can infect Windows regardless of whether you're viewing horseporn or copying cookie recipes in notepad. The moment you're on the Internet, malware can infect a Windows computer, even one behind a firewall. (edit: no need to be browsing the web for this to happen) Microsoft's updates for Windows have been known to crash computers, take for instance the recent update that disabled XP computers for days. The only solution was to re-install Windows and not install that update again.

Don't go pretending Windows is a pristine and flawless collection of code. Like all operating systems, it's riddled with so many bugs and blatant mistakes, it's a wonder it even runs. I made ridiculous amounts of money as a self-employed "computer-repair" guy. I put that in quotes because 90% of the time, "repairing" the computer just involved rolling back the registry to something before Adobe Acrobat had been updated for the 14th time.

For the record, you guys are all hardware junkies. My PC has an outdated motherboard with an oudated AMD low-power dual-core processor and 2 GB of RAM, and I can do anything any one of you can without breaking a sweat. The only high-end part in my system is a relatively new ATI 5750 fanless video card. In fact the whole system is completely silent, the only way to tell I've turned it on is to look at the power light. My days of multi-fan high-powered hardware are long behind me, and I couldn't be happier. I was sick of all that noise...

dont go pretending?

my XP64 crashed once in 4 years, when i had like 10+ 128 megabyte images loaded on the screen through some backwards ass Nikon scan program

so either i'm "really lucky" or i know what i'm doing, which ties back into the whole thing about being diligent with your workstation

Apple is idiot proof, but thats why it costs so much.

Show of hands, how many people have had a flawless experience with Windows?

(my hand is staying down, and not because I'm looking at horseporn)

well what do you suggest people use then? I would not use mac because its built on top of unix so why should i pay a hefty ransom for it. Can't use linux coz most of the software i use dont run on them. Whether you like to hear it or no, there is a world outside the good ole USA too and most of the people have access to a computer because anybody can put a crappy but rugged hardware together and run an os full of 'bugs and blatant' mistakes for cheap to get access to the web. It should have been linux but sadly it isn't.
i am not saying if windows is good or bad but i dont remember the last time my pc or desktop crashed..
Peace

I didn't say you should use anything. Feel free to use whatever you want. I'm not advocating the use or disuse of anything. All I said was Windows (and all operating systems, remember I included them too) is bug-ridden and terrible and can crash on a whim. My response was aimed at gooshin who stated that all instances of Windows crashing are a result of user error. Don't go looking for a Microsoft rant where there is none.

If you want one, though, I'm game.

Who the hell looks at horseporn anyways? That's digusting. I can go to a local farm and watch horses doing it for free, live and with full surround sound. I choose not to because I think it's messy and gross and the farmer's wife doesn't appreciate me watching her get plowed by a horse.

People PAY to watch this crap on their computers?

what SSD advantage?

I dont know what kind of SSD's you're looking at, but the price is still your first born + left nut.

And the storage capacity is mainly for basic day to day operation.
SSD Advantages:
Sequential Access, Random Access

The well respected consumer 10K RPM WD VelociRaptor 300GB is also shown in the benchmarks. I think last week the first SSD that retailed for <$100 was introduced, the space was meager (30GB), but it goes to show that it's perhaps a good idea to hold off buying those 10K RPM hard drives at ~$200 or above, given the performance disparities and the speed at which the prices of SSD is dropping, and wait for SSD prices to drop further.

For data backup it's another story, but for primary hard drive SSD can give a welcoming snappy boost.

I got the Full version of Win 7 Pro. from Adorama for $238.00 which was a pretty good deal, and it's free shipping if you can wait a week.

I have only had to reinstall windows a few times in 9 years. And that was my fault sharing MP3s online. I don't do Porn and Wares unless I buy them, I don't use any cleaning programs so I guess thats the reason I've been good so far.

I'm upgrading my system from.

Antec LanBoy <--- Case
EXOS Watercooling series II
AMD Athlon XP 2800+/333 FSB 512K Barton <--- CPU
2 of Kingston 1g & 1-512mg PC-3200 DDR-400 184-Pin <--- 2.5 gig
XP Pro sp-2
W.D. X-150g 10,000 rpm Raptor SATA HD <---O/S Drive
W.D. Two 75g 10,000 rpm Raptors
W.D. 160g SATA HD <---Music Drive

- Gigabyte GA-7NNXP nForce2 Ultra400 Dual Channel DDR <--Motherboard
- XFX 6800XTreme 256mb DDR3 Dual DVI TV <--------Videocard
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS 24-bit Plat. & <----Soundcard

Which I'll install most of the hardware in the wifes POS computer.

Maria, mother of god! If you're knocking up your own PC, you should be able to qualify as an OEM builder and get the OS for about $150.

I didn't want a OEM version, there is too much stuff missing from them than the full version.

Well I haven't been able to crash my work computer ever. Window XP. And yeah I am a heavy graphics user. I have crashed other wintel machines and a mac or two. But my Dell work computer seems stable.

Put in as much RAM as the board can take, you'll need it regardless of what OS you'll be using.
Yes, a 32-bit OS will greatly benefit from any amount over ~3.5 gig.

Yeah, I am sure your machine will run just as well as newer hardware processing 15-18MP files in Lightroom.
