One thing that has been suggested is that voters should vote out every incumbent regardless of party. That would certainly send a message.

I have advocated that for a long time. I'm not sure the message would be received, or remembered by the newly elected, but at least we would be starting over. Ethics, common sense, and awareness of what their purpose is all decrease with time in office. I used to think it was a simple slope, recently its become pretty obvious that the decline is exponential and compounded daily.

It CAN'T and won't happen. Even if you had candidates whose initial intentions were pure, one year in Washington and they would be as corrupt as the ones that are there now. Any politician getting a taste of power is like a shark smelling blood, and we're the ones bleeding. Occasionally, as we're seeing now, the feeding frenzy is so intense they start eating their own as well.
The Power is in the money......Lobbyists have the money, and with the new Supremes ruling, the gates of hell have been opened wide. Makes no difference which party you support, or if you are Independent, this is a huge mistake that will rapidly accelerate an already devastating trend to "buy representation". Instead of all the outrage over Obamacare, Wars, Socialism, Taxes etc, we should all be working together to ban all lobbyist cash. This would stop most of the problems in Washington, and lead to more civil and effective government.
Unfortunately, the lobbyists would make any attempt to ban lobbyist cash a big issue that would "destroy America", then proceed to fund the opposition with Billions. Once the Titanic was terminal....it was terminal......there was no alternative to sinking.
Regards!

Looks like the libs and the conservs agree here. The problem is the people in Government. Here in Texas we have a choice of the hair person and the non hair person for Gov. The hair person talks out of both sides of his mouth. The non hair person put Houston in the Red big time. Again, what kind of choice is this? Same ol same ol. Polititions are professional. They go from one public job to another even with term limits. They all do it. There is hardly any new blood anywhere.

We did have some other choices, although not the best, but they were poorly funded by the Lobbyists. Until we fix this Lobbyist/Cash problem, we are doomed to poor government. As long as the recipient of the most cash is the guy willing to be the biggest crook, that is exactly what we will get......the biggest crook. Jesus George sold out to be used by Big Oil...Obama is no different....he sold out to Big Unions and anyone else willing to toss him some change. It is never really about the people...that's a big joke in Washington.....or Austin.

The libs, conservatives, and Rupert, whatever he is. (Is there a "crackpot" philosophy?)

Seriously, Rupert, you once told me in a PM that I would be surprised at how much you and I agree on.
Strange as may seem, (and as rare as it is) you were right.

you should join her.

seems it fits your philosophy:
The headliner is Sarah Palin, the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008. Her messages lately display rifle cross hairs on 20 targeted Democratic Congressional districts and the exhortation: “Don’t retreat, just reload!”

I'd be all for that. Frankly I've never met a politician of any flavor that I'd trust not to steal my kid's lollypop. I say, boot em all out and make the #1 issue future term limits.

2 terms for Senators, 6 terms for Representatives (giving them each a possible 12 years in office) and just to be fair let a President serve 3 terms (matching Congresses 12 year limit).

12 years is time enough to get a long term job done but not enough to become a professional political leach (Robert Byrd, Strom Thurmond, Ted Kennedy, etc (sorry, except for Joseph Cannon the top 15 are all Democrats)).

Further I would cap Congress (and Pres/VP) at 75 years of age (notwithstanding the regular "civilian" retirement age of 65-67). This would decrease slightly the generational disconnect many of our elder statesmen exhibit. Frankly, if they want to continue working in government, let them move back to their states and volunteer.

I do realize that this would dilute the "experience" levels of our government overall, but is that really that bad a thing?

Mike

Funny enough, the poor deposed Tommy was for this sort of thing...

I don't mind that there are real long term senators and congressmen, for when they stop posing or doing the gestapo thing the Republicans are doing... no, not gestapo, sorry, I mean politburo... of refusing to play, the long term folks can get stuff done. If we had too many newbies, it would be like, how do I vote? I mean not do I vote Yay or Nay, but technically, How do I vote? Are committees like study halls?

Mike, that said, I would agree with what you propose. We'd still have political fun as a congressman nearing the 12 years is seen furiously trying to angle for the Senate...
