Blue I agree. That's why we've put in place an appeal process for mistakes like this. But we are also trying to make sure that it doesn't happen nearly as much in future as well.

But did you RTFM? kick (sorry, I couldn't resist )

A chicken infraction is when someone is doing things correctly and get blind sided by an infraction. Go look at the above example I linked earlier.

That's good to here because that's been a concern of several people.

Well...

I'm real new here. But I'm not new to the rodeo.

I was a site moderator at a particularly difficult site at one time in the past. And as a (long) past law enforcement officer, I've had experience will all sorts of people.

Admins have a tough job. "Teh public" is not easy to deal with. A perfectly innocent comment may be taken as a vicious attack by a psychopath and there are far more psychos than people realize.

That said, I love PF because there do appear to be significantly fewer psychos amongst these particular photographers. And generally speaking - especially in the photography / camera / lenses areas - the people are wonderfully nice, complimentary, friendly and welcoming. (and now I'm feeling guilty because there's one member I've been meaning to communicate more with and I've been swamped with work).

So, what am I trying to say?

Obviously, some people are unhappy and upset. But dragging that into the forum to "poison" (as someone said) the place really is out of line.

"Discuss amongst yourselves" is some of the best advice that Saturday Night Live ever gave. And I mean, privately, but not in a forum. Being in an online forum complaining about the site you are using without some constructive advice - i.e., that poisoning word again - is just wrong. "The site" includes the people who own, manage and/or care for the site.

Being an administrator is a thankless job. There's little reward for most people. And most other people are not suited for it.

I left the site I was helping administer voluntarily and gladly. And I never looked back. Sometimes, that little grain of sand in your shoe wears enough that you just chuck the shoe in the ocean and forget it.

Sometimes, that is a perfectly healthy thing to do.

I don't know any of the personalities. Obviously, I am new here. But this is a great resource, a great place to visit, a very enjoyable and knowledgeable membership. I was treated right from the first moment on.

Admins have a thankless job.
Owners have a thankless job, plus it costs them money to run the place.

Members have an obligation to try to help everything go smoothly, including realizing not every one is made for every purpose and sometimes life doesn't go the way you want it to go.

Life's not fair. Some men are drafted and sent to the front to die, while others are assigned to typewriters near their hometown. Life's like that. None of us are going to change it.

special note of contrition:

None of the above should be construed as to imply that any person on PF - or particularly in this thread - is a psychopath. Just that ..... there are people in the world who are irked by seemingly innocent things.

And there are language differences (that's a huge one) and perspective differences, and on and on.

Say something - anything - where a few thousand people can see it and every manner of return will come your way - friendly, rude, crude, cheerful, accepting, rejecting. That's all I'm sayin.

As an admin or moderator, I was once stalked by a woman (he/she said, anyway) who ended every message with "DON'T YOU REALIZE I'm A POET?" Enough said. (and no, poetry was not even remotely connected with the forum or website)

Actually, Ed and I are referring to the numerous times where the actual moving of a thread was questionable to begin with. The above example I posted is what I'm referring to. The guy put it in GT, someone moved it to film, then it got moved to Off Brand and the OP ended up with a chicken infraction. That is BS no matter how you cut it.

Ok, I'm only going to post once in this particular thread and that's in reference to this particular example.
I'm the one that moved it to the film forum and I'll admit it was a mistake because I was using the film aspect as a reference instead of focusing on the polaroid aspect. I will however stand by the decision to move it in the first place because GT isn't designated as a photography related forum. The reasons behind moving it were purely for keeping the forum tidy. Because of the nature of the thread, I didn't issue an infraction because I didn't consider it an unthinking placement and no foul was committed.
I can't remember who made the subsequent move and issued the infraction but that is no longer relevant. If Clicker wants to instigate an appeal because this was a mistake then that will be come apparent when it is looked at.
The point is, certain threads because of their subject matter aren't an easy fit, the OP often realises that when the thread is started and the moderator often has trouble placing it but is blinded to an extent by the fact that it is in the wrong place to start with.
Sorry to be long winded about this but I think this is an important area where the members can help administration correct things. The format of the forum is somewhat organic and in cases where a member is unsure of where to post or, doesn't think there is a right place to post it, there's no harm in hitting the Contact a Moderator button and explaining. The net result of an action like that is the identification of blind spots and the chance to eliminate them. That in turn makes the forum that much easier to navigate for everyone and no infraction (rightly or wrongly) gets issued. Everyone wins.

To respond to an earlier comment about me being the least tactful of the moderators, sorry, if that's an impression someone has, that's the impression they have. It's worth noting though that I was the most active moderator (not a boast, the statistics reflect that) so any impression could easily be skewed simply by my visibility. I also admit that I was a misplaced thread nazi but the majority of threads that I moved were moved without infractions given and, more often than not, a polite request to be more careful either in the thread or via PM. Yes, occasionally I've made mistakes and also I've got into it with people. Those who have had a lot of dealings with me know that's the way I am but they also know that if I turn out to be wrong, I will fess up to it. More than once, I've issued a public apology in an effort to smooth things over. I haven't said all this to defend myself BTW because I don't feel that there is anything to defend. Just putting the record straight.

Just to give an example of what I'm talking about.
I'm responding to Blue's post yet he and I don't get on, we butted heads too often in the political threads so now we keep out of each others way but I know that, apart from that, we do respect each other. Blue even wished me well in the other thread and I hereby thank him for that.

Only a man of very few words would consider that paltry series of sentences as "long winded" I don't think I've ever seen DB be long-winded. But then I haven't been here for years and years.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of whining here. Par for the course. Those not administrating will tend to find holes and complain. I for one am pleased with the way the forums are run. I think Damn Brit may have corrected one of my few posts. I don't recall, but if I thought it was lacking tact, I would have chalked it up to the name Brit part.(just kidding) Also is there something bad about wanting a venture to make money? If there is money being made here, it's not going to be a truckload. How about it Adam? Turn this into a porn site and you'll make some real money......LOL

pfff, thanks to this forum, I no longer have a social life. Can I blame DB for that? After all, it's his fault that the forum is so addictive. I so dearly want to blame someone else for my lack of social life.

Where did those roses go? They smelled good...

The guilty party rises in court and states: Your Honor, I plead guilty. The trial then moves to the mitigation phase. The guilty party states that he did not notice that the thread had been moved there by an (unnamed) Mod. A very civil PM from Clicker advised the guilty party of all the facts. The infraction was reversed and Clicker was told that the infraction had been removed and given to the (unnamed) Mod.

Note for Clicker: Would you please confirm the above. Since I am no longer a Mod I no longer have access to your infraction history.
