Tres kewl!! Much kewler than tossing a HandiCam with a trebuchet, or pointing a P&S out an airliner's window.

But I've always liked handheld shooting. I know! I'll get some weather balloons and tie them to a lawn chair and inflate them with helium, and go sailing up up and away! I know, it's been done already, but that guy didn't have a camera. Better yet, I'll hire someone to take my place. I've got a cousin who'll do just about anything on a wager. But he doesn't get the K20D, nope. A HandiCam will suffice.

A guy out in Oklahoma had been doing this sort of thing with his K20d.

They all seem to be using weather balloons which is going to be random some degree as to where it comes down. The guys in Oklahoma have had them come down in peoples back yards and such. Can you imagine going out in the back yard and getting drilled with a K10d & 18-55mm/GPS unit at 22 mph?

For some reason I started thinking of Balloon Boy and his idiot parents with this thread. Your post magnified the thought

That is pretty awesome. It is an interesting person who wakes up on morning and says to himself "you know what, today i am going to launch a camera into the stratosphere"

Has anyone here mounted their camera to something to get a photo?

Sometimes I'll mount a P&S on the end of a walking staff / monopod and hold it up or (if I'm elevated) out over a crowd, punching the wired remote switch. But there are amateur Estes rockets and back in the day, they featured a tiny film cam you could blast a few hundred meters into the air. 110 format, I think. I launched a few of those from Custer Hill at Ft Riley KS till the MPs made me stop, said I was messing with radar.

Would I risk my K20D on some unattended balloon or the like, to get shots from above? Or even my ZX-M with a good lens? Not bloody likely. That's P&S (film or digital) territory, something more expendable. Remember, sh!t happens. Plans fail. Things fall out of the sky. If they're mine, I'd rather they be cheap things.

I instantly imagined a dslr mounted onto a RC helicopter. Bloody big helicopter, and then i imagined it crashing into the ground smashing helicopter and camera... Could take some pretty awesome landscape shots doing it. Until it crashed.

There's someone on the Sigma forums at DPR,who made an 8 bladed chopper with GPS and everything imaginable, and flies with his DP series camera. He has some pretty amazing pano's done with it.
If I can find one of his posts today I'll post a link. The thing is amazing.
