Who Else Likes Art? (Paintings)

I like the pre-Raphaelites the best, but I like a lot of other artists too.

In no particular order, I like:

John William Waterhouse
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Sir Edward Coley Burns-Jones
William Bouguereau
Edmund Blair Leighton

among many others.

Here's a good site to start looking at their art if you're not yet familiar with it.
CGFA- Indexes Just look for the artist's last name.

I'm not an art snob, I just know what I like.

These are two of my favorites. I'm trying to get the right models to recreate them as photographs.

You can almost feel and hear the wind in this one!
CGFA: John William Waterhouse: Windflowers

Just pleasing to the eyes. Someone at this forum uses this one in his avatar.
CGFA: John William Waterhouse: My Sweet Rose

So, who do you like? It can be any other form of art you'd like to mention.

Mike

Odilon Redon: for pure colour no artist compares. Photographers could learn studying Redon's colour compositions rendered in pastel. Intense!

Salvador Dali and Hieronymus Bosch for their creative minds.

Chuck Close. The more you look there's more to see, up close and far away. Legions of software programmers write code to emulate Chuck Close's technique.

El Greco, Velasquez, Rembrandt: chiarroscurro, light from darkness. Sublime.

The myriad unnamed Islamic geometry tiling masters of centuries past: you'd think non-figurative repetitive pattern would be easy. It's not, it's simplicity achieved through uncompromising complexity: pure composition with ultra limited colour palette communicating the essence of god.

Vermeer - absolute master of light.

I'm also rather partial to my cousin's paintings, and her husband's, but I don't imagine anyone here would ever have heard of them!

There are others, of course, but Vermeer is the one that pops to mind first.

Well I've learned something new today; Odilon Redon was at the CGFA site in my first post, and yet I never noticed him. I do like his style a lot.

Thanks, Donald!

I like these two best:
Great use of warm color against cool.
CGFA- Odilon Redon: Red Boat with a Blue Sail

And this one with both pastel and charcoal is genius.
CGFA- Odilon Redon: Stained Glass Window

And, Julie, I do agree that Vermeer was a master of light.

Here's another site for all to check out: ArtMagick: Your Source of Visual Intoxication

I also like Lucien Levy-Dhurmer's style. Kind of like a soft-focus lens with 1600 speed film shot on an overcast day if you equate his work to photography.

Check out: ArtMagick: Lucien Levy-Dhurmer (French, 1865-1953)

A Bridge In Bruges
A French Soldier Under A Blossom Tree
The Gust Of Wind (the first one)
A Wood Nymph - (my favorite)

Thanks for your replies, Donald and Julie. Perhaps we can get more.

I have a lot more to learn about art than that which I can recommend.

Mike

Here's one that I hadn't noticed before:

ArtMagick: Evelyn De Morgan (British, 1855-1919): The Worship of Mammon

Talk about a painting telling a story without words!
