How to become a Photographic Superstar - 1976

I found my copy of The Photography Catalog, a '76 knock-off of the Whole Earth.

This I find funny, I wonder how we'd update this for today.

It's a page from an early zine, circulation 300, no back issues, sporadically published twice a year. Looks like a hoot.

Another amusing thing, and at the time influential to me, is their doubt about auto exposure (never mind auto focus, not yet!)... and even the presence of a built in meter. The latter is in evidence on this page about the Leica; the former is repeated in several articles: auto exposure makes you forget your skills, erases your fingerprint from your photography, produces frame after frame of reasonably but boringly exposed film; in general, encourages sloth and debases photography

Not much on the list has changed, just add a blow-up-doll and a Nikon D80 to the top list, and change the bottom one to a Nikon D80 brochure

Jussi, where do you find all these old ads and magazines? Have you been raiding some 2nd hand shops lately? I suppose you didn't buy them in the 70s yourself?

Anyway, keep'em coming! They're quite entertaining and provide some perspective.

LOL, yes, I do go around buying a few lately - I'd thrown out my original batch around '81... but this Photographer's Catalog I've had since then. It was very formative for me

A great take on auto-exposure, neurosis indeed! Well worth a read and not just for its historical perspective.
