my intent was to get him down to the price that the ladies had offered it to me the day before -
$40 then the bargaining would start.
so yes, every time he said $80, I said $40
everything I have read about their culture, and have been told about their culture from a Tanzanian guide of 30 years experience
and a man who led 130 trips to Africa in 40 years informed me not to accept the first price but to bargain
if they didn't want to bargain, they would not do so.
I considered the first price offered to me as $40

now had he said " the ladies made a mistake on the price when they offered it to me for $40 ",
instead of lying to me by saying they didn't understand English, I would not have bargained at all.
I was at the Lodge for 3 nights, I talked to the ladies, I saw other people talk to the ladies
they had no problem with the English language.

I was at the same lodge 3 years before, the Maissai who staffed the store then had no problem with the English Language.
in my limited experience, the Maissai do not staff their stores with people who cannot converse in the English Language
