If a hood is part of the lens, it must be included, and mounted properly.

None of this silly 'hood on backwards in the stored position' stuff.

nuts - am I going to have to go back through a couple of dozen lenses and remeasure?

We already had a judge’s ruling RE: Lens Hoods - detachable hoods not included; self-hoods extended and measured.
Is there a higher Court to which we may appeal for clarification?

FWIW the D FA*70~200/2.8 is massive. I don’t have enough units on hand, especially with hood mounted. I don’t even have a place to store it, much less carry it attached to a camera. But boy, is it fast.

Bicycles. Meh.

It does take a few of the SMU

But it can be measured

I beg to differ

And since I live in a Representative Democracy and I haven't seen any official announcement that made anyone king or queen or emperor

I won't comply

OK ????

BTW, the originator of the SMU agrees with my position

Of course I don'the know of any penalty to be imposed should some one decides to measure however they want to

But the hood makes the lens. Just like trim on a house or automobile.

You wouldn't take a picture of your house with the doors and windows removed.

Or your all original MGB without the hood.

Hoods, if included when the lens is aquired, should be either properly mounted as they would be for use, or placed in the composition so as to accentuate the photo.

Never, ever, should a lens be removed from its storage case and displayed or mounted, with the lens hood improperly positioned on the lens.

It just looks tacky.

Maybe.

Beyond my paygrade to know that though.

The penalty is self imposed. You'll have fewer SMU units to eat afterwards.

You may live in a representative democracy, but the forum is not a democracy.

More like a monarchy. The admins, Adam and Ole are the kings. The m0dUlator staFF are the knights who are charged with keeping order and helping damsels in distress, with little, if any compensation for their time and effort.

And everyone else fall into two categories.

The supporting members, akin to the "upper class".

And non supporting members, or Pentaxians, who gain special privileges by virtue of tenure and contribution, or the "middle" and "lower classes".

There is a fairly well thought out and detailed set of rules, or guidelines, that everyone here is expected to abide by. For the most part it is a living set of rules, that changes from time to time. Still, everyone would be well advised to refer to them from time to time, to ensure a harmonious and pleasant environment for all members and guests here.

Sometimes people get a bit crossthreaded with the knights and, or, the king(s). There are mechanisms in place so they can whine about how whatever rule was broken doesn't apply to them. Sometimes they win. Sometimes they loose.

That's how I understand it anyway.

Very good point

Unfortunately I am not allowed to eat any, they just go back into the freezer

Yes there are forum rules

But none that cover this issue of measurement

My SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM was ordered in January and it came on on Friday and I picked it up yesterday. Measured with some very precious but soon to be gone imported genuine UK Jaffa Cakes. Luckily I had enough as it took the better part of 2 boxes. Added to my challenges were 2 six month old kittens who were desperately trying to get in on the treat.
