Dan that's a nice looking setup.. ya turncoat!

I prefer Nikon to Canon for no particular reason. It's my understanding that at least some Pentax lens work on Canon but not on Nikon. It's rumored that you have a couple of Pentax lenses so I'm curious why you went with Nikon.

I think to use K mount lenses on a Canon requires surgery, not so for M42s.

Well, I'm not even sure I'll keep any of the lenses in the second picture (the mid-range zooms) as I have the 24-120/4 VR coming in on Friday

The rumor is true, I do have a few Pentax lenses I did sell off my three FA* lenses on Monday to fund what's posted above. But that still leaves a pretty healthy collection including 7 limiteds and 3 DA* lenses (and then some). So I'm not sure I'd label myself a turncoat quite yet... more like exploring my options

As for my Nikon over Canon, I think I just felt it was a better fit for what I wanted. The main things I was looking for was improved AF speed and accuracy, especially in low light. From everything I read and from the people who I talked to who have owned both, the D700 seemed like the best choice for me. I tried a 5D MkI last year right when I was in between K-5 bodies (stain issues) and it just never really won me over. That said, I did really like the 70-200/2.8 and 70-200/4 I tried while I was playing around with Canon.

My understanding is that K-mount lenses need surgery to mount on a FF Canon. M42 lenses on the other-hand are fine since they don't have an aperture level that needs to be removed.

Wait, so you got the old 24-120 and the new one?

Yeah, LBA is well under control.

Well how else am I suppose to make an informed decision as to whether the new one is worth over 4x the price

Well, my body finally arrived to compliment the five lenses I already bought (with one more lens still on the way). Good things I have complete control over this whole LBA thing

I would have loved the D700 2 years ago. but the impending successor made the D700 lose it's luster for me. if I could get one for $800, that might change my mind.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. The other way to look at is is that there's a nice upgrade path down the road in a few years if I felt I wanted/need it. In the meantime, I'm fairly certain the D700 works just as well as it did two years ago, even if some of the competition around it (including the Pentax with the K-5) have somewhat closed the gap over that same period of time. FWIW, I did consider waiting for the D800. But with all the delays and the fact that I probably wouldn't have wanted to pay the initial asking price, I felt this was the way to go for now.

Congratulations!

I sold my(traded actually) D700 about 8 months ago.
I really liked it, and it was definitely one of the best bodies I've used in a number of fronts.
Unfortunately... I couldn't afford to own a FF kit like I do with Pentax and so it wasn't the right body for me.

PS. I look forward to hearing your own thoughts on how the D700 feels and performs also.

Douglas, if it's not too "indiscreet", how much did you pay the 30/2.8 ?

That's silly, it's still the best camera I've ever owned. (And also a good deal cheaper than whatever the successor will be.)

Hey Aurele,

Guilty as charged

My exxy lens just arrived. The Tamron 90mm macro. Paid big in the hopes that it would stop my LBA.

Umm... not sure it's working. The LBA cure that is, not the lens. I'm snapping a pic of everything on my desk atm. LOL. Everyone at work thinks I'm nuts.
