It is absolutely amazing the lore that is available on this forum
But to live outside the lore you must be honest

thanks he did most of it

he suggested black but I wanted the contrasting color

I almost printed my contact info on it because I was worried about confusing it with the numerous other modified stedistock I expected to find in the national parks

I also expected to find and photograph mountain lions, lynx and unicorns
When we were driving from Yellowstone to Bismarck ND my son saw a large black cat walking along a dirt road adjacent to I94. This was around mile marker 60 and the road was alongside the eastbound lane. It was walking dragging it's tail with the very end turned up. He said the total length, including the tail, looked like 1/2 length of a car. I don't know if there are any stories of panthers reported in that area but it would have been the shot of the trip. But we were doing almost 80mph and all the photo gear was packed up.

in Yellowstone, we saw a wolf being chased by two coyotes, a bob cat or lynx and a pine martin but had no chance to photograph any of them as they ran across the road in front of us

believe it or not

I have a dash cam in my pickup truck. I saved all the files related to all the driving we did on the park. From the time we left the hotel int he morning until we returned in the evening. Each 5 minute file is about 550 mb. The 64gb card will record something like 8 hours before overwriting itself. When the wolves were introduced, they killed most of the coyotes in their territories. Looks like the coyotes are fighting back. Coyotes will kill solitary wolves if they catch them.

we were on a guided photographic tour out of the Lake Yellowstone Hotel and our guide who has worked in the park for 29 years said he had heard of coyotes chasing wolves but this was the first time he had personally seen it.

Got some 645 lenses

Just nailed down two off of eBay:

Pentax-A 645 120mm f 4.0 macro
Pentax-A 645 45-85mm f 4.5

. . . for use with adapter on K-1 and K-3.

Also ordered a Komine 28mm f 2.0 from Japan.

found a photo of the rig I was using in the Gran Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks:

the K 3 + HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW mounted on the modified Stedistock II. ( added extra screw attachment point, shortened shotgun stock and duct tape )

It usually had an Op Tech USA Utility Strap attached to the camera as well as the JOBY UltraFit Hand Strap with UltraPlate .

looks like it might be zoomed out to the maximum 450 mm

the set up did start a conversation or two

I am thinking I need to add a quick release set up to allow a quick transfer to a tripod when necessary

[ I would also have ready my K 5 II + HD Pentax-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR if I needed a "close up" set up ]

my friend who modified the standard stedistock II by adding an additional screw attachment point, necessary to securely fasten the big guy to it was attempting to permanently attach the shortened shotgun stock to it. He ran out of time and was very apologetic. I suggested trying duct tape and he was outraged but I'm a realist not a perfectionist so he did as I asked.

it worked well

Have you tried street photography, or attended a political rally, with this setup yet ?
