I've been on a Pentax roll the last few weeks, picked up a K2 which is taking a detour to Mr Eric Henderson first, a SMC55/1.8 and today a DFA50/2.8 Macro. Had been holding out for Pentax to modernise (it seems to me to be a complete no brainer to add a WR body and selective focus ranges) but it can join my other 50s.

Werramat: Hints, help??

Okay! I didn't see a good place for this, but here it will probably be read and maybe I'll get a response!

The Werra is a line of compact 35mm produced by Zeiss Jena. They are elegant, beautifully made, and somewhat collectible. The Werramat has interchangeable lenses - 35 mm, 50 mm, and 100 mm, all quite sharp. The shutter is in the body. The Werramat has a coupled meter, and an excellent viewfinder.

My Werramat just arrived, lovely little camera! I also scored the 100 mm tele, both camera and the 50 mm and the tele seem to be in excellent + condition. The shutter sounds good at all speeds, VF clear, no lens flaws, etc.

I even have the instruction manual, such as it is. Since I've got about 60 years of film burning I'm figuring the camera out, but for a beginner.... good luck! Anyone out there know of a handy-dandy guide, such as were published back in the day by third-party folks? For example the "Way" series.

Another question. While the helical on the 100 is silky-smooth, the 50 is stiff and needs cleaning. Any thoughts on a good shop to do this? Since the shutter is in the body the lenses should be simple inside, but not for me to attempt!

Many thanks for any help!

Try dcshooter https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/34960-dcshooter - he does excellent work and can refinish it as well.

Those Werras were pretty neat. I can see myself owning one someday.
BTW I recently purchased some later Praktica bayonet SLRs and lenses.

As Vince said you know the Germans always make good stuff...

Second dcshooter. He's refurbishing a CZ Ultron 1,8 50mm to original operating condition for me (and leaving the finish untouched to retain the patina).

Continuing the German theme, but unfortunately on a less exalted level, a big job lot of Praktica bayonet equipment; a BC1 body with four Praktica and one Sigma lens - 50mm 1.8 in very nice condition, 28mm 2.8 with very slight fungus, 35-80mm and 70-210 OK, and the Sigma is a 75-300mm, unfortunately another one with slight fungus. Also seven or eight filters, two crap electronic flashes, a Russian Leningrad 7 selenium light meter and a pneumatic shutter release cable, and other small odds and ends. Got the lot for about £30, I'll keep the BC1 as a replacement for the BCA I've been using to test lenses in this fitting, the BCA and lenses etc. should make a modest profit on ebay.

At a closer look the Praktica lenses are Japanese. So it goes...

A few things I can add which don't appear to be on that linked site:
- for a time I had a used "made in Japan" Carl Zeiss Jena-labelled B series 75-300 zoom, which is not listed - at the time I thought it could have been made by Sigma, but I now see that maybe it is more likely to have been made by Samyang! Anyway, was not impressed and soon sold it on.
- I still have Sigma (not Samyang!)-branded 28-70 and 70-210 B-mount zooms - they came together in a Sigma-branded kit case (now long since gone).

I just compared that Sigma 28-70 with a similar but much later 28-70 PKA-mount version, and there is a lot of resemblance - notably the markings around the front element - and so I think that the B-mount version is almost certainly a genuine Sigma product.

I also still have a BX-10 and a BX20S, both with motor drives, and the latter was my favourite B-mount body. OTOH, I briefly also had a used BCA which I bought cheap and then traded in for something else as the above bodies were more useful.

Nothing new regarding Pentax, but for Minolta:

  • Minolta SRT-102 Camera (To replace my 101 with a stuck shutter)
  • JC Penney 1:4.4 80-200mm zoom lens (SR mount, came with the SRT-102)

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for my MacBook Pro, so that I can run some tethering freeware that isn't available for Mac. A pain to install, and I'll have to reboot if I want Windows, but it all works in the end. A tenner for a legit DVD and license, which isn't at all bad.

I am running Win 7 Pro on my MacBook Air, but I use Parallels -- It's in a Virtual Machine. 3 finger slide to switch from Win to Mac and back. About $100 and well worth it, IMHO. It was recommended by a fellow (?) RDBMS developer, Fatima who has been running Win 7 Pro since she upgraded from XP because Quicken wouldn't run on XP any more.
