"Good question".
Here's the situation:
- 2 years ago we had 5x machines running a mixture of 7 Home (2x - SWMBO's Dell 1525 laptop, and my little ASUS 1225B netbook), 7 Pro (2x - 1x old ACER X275 desktop and 1x newer ACER N4620G nettop) & 7 Ultimate (1x - my main Samsung laptop).
- About then, I decided it was time to
experiment with upgrades to Win 10 on some machines because of the future demise of Win 7 support and thus of my need to get to know Win 10, and so I "upgraded" SWMBO's (to 10 Home) and the N4620G (to 10 Pro). I also upgraded the Samsung and then downgraded it immediately as that should have allowed me to upgrade again at any future time - and I tried to upgrade the ASUS but that just wouldn't work.
- Earlier this week, I was at a U3A Computer Club mtg, and one of the group leaders said that people really should upgrade their earlier OS m/c's (the tech savey of most of the club members varies from clueless to "moderately educated"!), and the other group leader said that it was still possible to do that -
even though it had been widely publicised that free upgrades would stop around the end of 2017, and so I challenged him on that point and he then posted the link to the upgrade path.
- I then decided to try that out on the old X275 which doesn't get used for much except to run a sat receiver card, and so was "expendable" if everything went "you know where"! Anyway, I did try that route, and it did work (at the 2nd attempt after the 1st one got into an interminal loop and I had to reboot it - at which point it rolled gracefully back to 7 Pro)!
