Little project. Can I turn this old Nikkor-Q into a K-mount lens:

I found this yesterday. The only markings say it is a Tokina AF 35-300mm f4.5 to 6.7, with a 72mm filter thread. A quick check of the Pentax forum did not identify this model, so I bought first and checked later. I don't think I have had my hands on a 35-300mm anything ever. Glass looks clear, zoom ring is a bit stiff, autofocus works well, body and threads unmarked - which all suggest it has not had much use. Minimum focus is 2.5m, which points to it being from the early days of AF.

I will keep it only if it turns out to be reasonably good. A few comments I found using Google showed a range of opinions, some coloured by the fact that the lens in whatever mount did not work properly on the camera it was tested on. This is a PKA mount, and the aperture was coupled properly when I was testing it wide open and at f8-11. Next few days will see if I can get some good sharp shots with it. If not then I will move it on. Hand-holding a 600g lens at focal length 300mm will be a bit of a challenge.

Update - here is a detailed description of the lens: https://www.flickr.com/photos/arcticcorsair/550739103

A review page: http://www.photographyreview.com/product/lenses/35mm-zoom/tokina/35-300mm-f-4-5-6-7-lens.html
Some of the low ratings seem to relate to a faulty lens. I will be testing at 1600ISO to give me a 1/1000s shutter so I can minimise subject and camera movements.

I just discovered that the lens has a lock to hold the barrel at 35mm so it can be carried at the minimum physical length.

You and me both. I’d also gladly accept the A f/2.8 or the m42 f/4.5

I've got my second member of the Three Amigo's. There was a 77mm on Ebay and the seller lives about 5km away. He was accepting offers so I put one in and (a little surprisingly) he accepted. I used an Ebay promo code for another 10% off and it arrived today. It looks close to mint condition for about half the cost of a new one. I've done a few quick test shots and I can see why it has such a stellar reputation!!

It will keep my 31mm company but I can't see a real need for the 43........although I'm sure there are people on here will try to convince me otherwise
The 43 is such a workhorse, you'll love it once you get it.

Found a very nice copy of the 43 in Sydney on Ebay at a very attractive price with a "Make An Offer" option. Even the BIN price was a good deal but after "convincing" myself over the last few days that I didn't have a need for it I put in a slightly cheeky offer that the seller accepted. Ebay also had a small discount promo code so that covered the postage costs. Scored an almost brand new 43 for roughly half price of new.

So I'm done - I've got my Three Amigo's as my K30 kit. Nothing else I want.

Well done Carl. Great that your cheeky offer worked out.

I am getting these ebay promo messages at the moment - every time I look at something I get back an email saying that if I still want it then there is another discount. I am a bit shopped out at present, still finding the strengths of my DA Limited set of four, and resisting the call of the 35mm Limited - that 35mm DA is plenty good. The three amigos are close enough in focal length to the DA Limiteds that I can go slowly.

Got this one because of its looks... Auto Aragon 35mm f2.8 on M42... I also got it because I could not find any info on it specifically online (I did find some Auto Aragon info, but nothing on the 35/2.8).

Test shots - nothing special - also it goes waaay beyond infinity (might even try to correct this myself). It does look cool, especially mounted on a black body.

And here's the photo of my new baby boy (Sears TLS 1000 MX), along with the Vivitar 35mm f2.8 I got about a month or so ago.
All the camera needs is new light seals & a CLA, but then what old camera doesn't?
Bodywise, overall its pretty clean & meter works (hazaa!).

---------- Post added 05-21-19 at 07:38 PM ----------

Ok, quick update. Decided to check the shutter speeds real quick, and it definitely needs a CLA.
The slower shutter speeds, 1s, 1/2s, and 1/4s, all hang when fired, which I need to move the shutter speed dial to Bulb to get the mirror down. All other shutter speeds sound/seem to work fine.

Just for fun - a 49mm petal-style lens shade that will be useful and practical, 4 different 52mm filters to play around with (closeup +2, closeup +4, soft spot - actually sharp central spot and soft surrounds, sepia) and a 58mm 6-point-star to recreate the magazine shots of the 1970s. All for $20. The shop had about 25 filters of 52mm diameter - all part of a boxful that was would have brought almost no cash for the original owner - and now they don't know how to unload them.

Of the ones I bought, the centre-spot may be good for portraits without needing to use a very wide aperture. This would give me a reasonable depth of field on the subject but would fog the background.

Closeup "filters" are a simple and light (poorer-quality) alternative to travelling with a macro lens. I have a Canon one already but that is pretty strong, I hope that the +2 will be generally good enough and less dramatic edge distortion.

Very cool looking lens! I am a sucker for the silver powder-coat look. Google gave me a link to the listing. You did very well on price too.

A job lot of six lenses and converters. Cost £16, and its unfortunately a reminder of why job lots are not always a good idea, even cheap ones - one converter is OK, all the rest have fungus to varying degrees. More for the "Big pile o'crap" job lot I plan to offer one of these days...

How do you guys find these "lot" deals with a bunch of camera loot for what seems like pennies?
