Just picked up a mint condition Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 for not very much. Contax mount. Can't wait for an adapter to arrive so I can test it out!

Well that explains everything.

Perhaps you should take a holiday and tour those same places.

Perhaps I should but this is cheaper

And got sixes! It's pristine and worked perfectly once I switched it to F32. VERY heavy trombone-type 70-210 4-5.6, all-metal construction so obviously from the early days of Nikon autofocus. Extremely pleased, and I will have to do something nice for Oxfam. Donate my next lot of unwanted books or something.
Took it out for some test photos today, worked very well indeed

I was slightly wrong about the construction, the moving part of the trombone is some sort of plastic, the inner barrel is metal. Made between 1987 and 1993 (when the virtually identical D version was introduced, the difference mainly being the firmware).

I see an A setting, is that a K mount?

no, that is an A/M switch for the aperture pin; this is an M42 mount lens...

De-clicked the iris of the Vivitar 20mm, and removed all the AE levers/protrusions. Lost the little ball, so no going back now! XD

My solution to the extremely loose iris ring was to cut a double sided tape in half (so it's only one side) and stick it on the inside of the ring with some grease. A little stiff but hopefully will loosen up with use as it compresses more.

And an M42 macro tube so the bellows will clear the horn of the onboard camera flash overhanging the mount. Unscrewing from the M42 adapter is tricky otherwise - been there done that. :-)

Thank a lot for the trick, Arjay Bee,
Happily a T-2 adapter allowed me to avoid this

Suggestion: 1) get an M42 to M39 adapter (= Pentax thread to Leica thread); 2) get a used enlarger lens* and mount that on the bellows. OR: 1) get an M42 to filter thread adapter, any size 49mm or greater; 2) reverse mount a normal to moderately WA prime lens or an enlarger lens*

*The 50mm f2.8 El-Nikkor was very popular, is available used for reasonable cost, and has a good reputation for use as a deep macro lens in normal, or even better reverse mount.

If you don't know where to get an adapter, try
1) adapterrings.com

2) Thor Labs.

I like those AMUs even more than the originals! At least for snacking.
