I was a bit disappointed with my Sigma EX macro 50mm - closeup was really good but the distance shots seemed underwhelming. I was hoping for a lens to use travelling that would be both a good macro and a walkaround 50mm. The Pentax is smaller and lighter than the Sigma.

I saw this on an Australian site for $260AUD, which I think is very good value and should meet my needs. The lens arrived looking unused in original packaging. The seller had provided additional goodies - 3 filters (PL, Skylight and +2) in a Hoya folder, plus cleaning gear.

My first few shots included as examples. I think this is better than the Sigma for travelling, it is also same filter thread as the full set of DA Limited lenses so I can go with just 49mm filters and hood.

Now I have way too many 50mm lenses (7) and too many macros (4 primes), but that is what happens with LBA.

Just a side note: the two shots of the lens were taken with an Adaptall-2 28mm, PKA adapter on auto exposure. That is quite a passable closeup lens, but not really macro.
Congrats! The lens looks great and it seems you got a deal.

It’s Pentax branded and from 1976 at the earliest. it’s perhaps not all that exciting for some but quite a new experience for me.

I have such a lens, now I want the monocular converter as well - or do I NEED it?

Nice - I have the A version of Pentax's 50/2.8 and the Non-EX version of the Sigma 50/2.8 Macro = in my case as well the Pentax is the "better" lens overall. The Sigma does produce some very interest tones and bokeh wide open and at close range.

Curious to see if this really gives a boost!

If it is for a Canon crop body, I believe it it can be easily adapted to fit a Pentax crop body - just file off a tab, or something like that.

Last car boot fair of the year, and picked up a Canon Eos 350D (I think that's the Digital Rebel XT) for £40 with an 18-55 EF zoom, charger, and a ridiculously big 32GB Kingston CF card. I say ridiculous because it'd hold say 40,000 pictures at this camera's resolution. Working well anyway, but I think I'll be keeping the card and selling the camera with something a little saner...

The hand grip I mentioned in a previous post turns out to be for the Mamiya M645 professional. It needs a bit of cleaning, it has the dreaded decaying black non-slip coating you get on a lot of 80s-90s gear, but someone will probably want it.

I picked up an Amazon Basics backpack as the little camcorder bag I borrowed from work has quickly run out of space. While it's not the perfect bag, I'm hopeful that it will last long enough to figure out what I really want in a bag and what I really want to carry when I'm out.

Also a question while I'm here, many, if not most, backpacks seem to show pictures of the camera being at the top of the bag. I often thought this seemed a bit odd as I'd think that would be a lot of weight up high instead of down at the bottom. Does everyone tend to carry this way or would it make more sense to have the camera at the bottom of the bag? Common backpacking sense tells me to put it at the bottom unless I find myself with a bunch of lenses that weight more than the camera or something...

Only downsides I can see are if the padding at the bottom wears thin, it could damage the camera, if something gets spilled and the bag gets wet and leaks then the camera could get wet and damaged, and that accessing the camera from the bottom of the bag instead of the top might take an extra couple of seconds to get the camera out. Any thoughts on this? I'll probably end up making this it's own post elsewhere later.

I have a little backpack too. The camera stays at the top because the backpack opens from above. If I want it immediately it cannot stay at the bottom.
