Good points. I like the idea of different converters giving different renditions, will give me a reason to try several programs, however, the converter that comes with pentax is just a simple, watered down program with little features. It does make a nice browser if you're looking to browse very quickly through hundreds/thousands of images and quickly convert/edit them
You should try Silkypix 4, which is really the full version of the Pentax DCU. Once you get used to the interface it is very capable and fast. Betas of Silkypix 5 also look very promising.

OP, you need to understand the utility of RAW and how as a 'digital negative' RAW "images" should never be thought of as a finished product as you synonymously expect it to be with JPEGs. RAW images are always considered 'processed' once converted to JPEG even if by default settings by definition, which rarely produce images showing the full capability of the RAW format.

Here's your challenge if you wish to accept it

This is a paired RAW+JPG from my K-x
that suffers from a pretty strong/diastrous magenta light problem
(red and blue LEDs only)

IMGP4490.DNG
and
IMGP4490.JPG

This ought to show convincingly that RAW is superior -

see if you can recover it to some semblance of normal -
and please explain why a RAW conversion (any processor you care to use) is superior to the JPG?
Well.......I may just have to take you up on this ;0)

Will do. I wonder if full version of silkypix comes with the k-5?

Cool! thanks -

looking forward to your results
and explanation why RAW conversion is better -

Suggestion, if I may, please post your results at 800pixel max width so that we can all see them without sideways scrolling?

Thanks,

The full version of SilkyPix software does come with each Pentax dSLR kit, and it's version 4 that comes with the K-5.

That's news to me, when did Pentax start doing that?

samples...

Here are a few samples from a slightly different perspective...

Here is the straight jpg version of a shot, with in-camera settings...
K-5, ISO 80, 1/100sec, F5.6, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm.
Name: K5A_1496.jpg
Views: 435
Size: 95.0 KB

This same jpg was opened from Adobe Bridge into PS and "Saved As".
K-5, ISO 80, 1/100sec, F5.6, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm.
Name: K5A_1496-JPG-BR-PS.jpg
Views: 468
Size: 95.2 KB

This DNG file (raw) was opened in FastStone Image Viewer and saved as a jpg.
You can see that it more or less used the embedded settings from the jpg preview.
K-5, ISO 80, 1/100sec, F5.6, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm.
Name: K5A_1496-FS-DNG-to-jpg.jpg
Views: 488
Size: 96.7 KB

This is the DNG file opened in Adobe Camera Raw and saved as a jpg with no manipulation from me, i.e., just the defaults from ACR.
K-5, ISO 80, 1/100sec, F5.6, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm.
Name: K5A_14961985-ACR-to-jpg.jpg
Views: 434
Size: 94.3 KB

One of the final renderings after working on it in ACR and FastStone. One of the issues I had with this image, was the way I wanted to render the top left and right corners of the sky.
Working on the jpg at that level of saturation, caused a lot of separation of the blues into distinct bands, but I was able to somewhat control it within the raw file.
I still had to chop off a bit at the top, but I more or less got what I wanted.

Thought I'd give it a shot. You like this? Try it with the jpeg.

Every camera I've bought from the K100D onwards had the CD-ROM for the SilkyPix software, both for RAW conversion and JPEG editing. Certainly nowhere near as refined as ACR and Photoshop (which is what I've always used) but at least Pentax gives you that option.

That is very impressive - be grateful if you can please tell us how your result was achieved, please?

OK here's the JPG original -
just resized to show the pretty horrendous magenta problem:

Now the Post Processed JPG -
you have to take my word for it that it was the JPG I processed -

Both shots should have the EXIF still attached
(caveat: PhotoBucket can drop metadata)

Once others have detailed what was done to achieve their results from the DNG/RAW file
I'll describe what it took to get my result from the JPG.

The first image is a screen shot of all that was done in Adobe Camera Raw. The second was after opening it in Photoshop and just making some color balance and Hue and saturation adjustments. I had to do it again to get the screen shot. The first time I was in a hurry and didn't notice the color of the curtains so I made them green this time.

I'm also impressed with what you did from the jpeg.

But that's just a watered down version for Pentax, not the real full SilkyPix software.
