Only way I can get my K-01 to grey out interval shooting is when there's no memory card in it.

Are you in a User mode (does the K-01 have user modes...?), for some inexplicable reason, interval shooting is greyed out when using a user mode on the K-50...

Also, interval shooting isn't available to use if you haven't got the date and time set in the camera. If when you turn it on, and it asks for date and time, don't ignore it, but enter something and accept.

Having recently figured this problem out on the broken K-500 I got might the internal battery be dead? On my K-500 it is so at startup I have to enter date and time and then save it. if I don't then interval shooting is grayed out and I can't use it however once entered it works. So that would be a good guess for something to look at.

So, my K-01's "trick" is that if the main battery is out of the camera for a few seconds, it loses its date & time.

After ascertaining that "Interval Shooting" is indeed a viable menu choice, I removed the battery for 10 seconds and then re-inserted. I bypassed setting the date & time, and lo and behold "Interval Shooting" was grayed out. Once I set the date & time, it became a viable option again.

So the timer must be assigned to noting the current time and counting elapsed time. Interesting. Some clocks like my microwave just flash 12:00 but some just start at 12:00 and begin. Yet my microwave can still count time.

There is a capacitor In cameras* that powers the date/time memory function. That capacitor can go bad if it is not supplied power for an extended period because the main battery drains in the camera or the battery is removed to store the camera. That’s why you have to set the date/time when you start the camera.

* and a tiny battery that feeds it when the power is off.

Thanks for all the helpful replies!
I was going to a nearby volcano and thought there might be some weather to capture with interval.
in the end I took the Q7 and as it was a clear blue sky I didn't use that either...
will check out the K-O1 with your suggestions
