There is a capacitor In cameras* that powers the date/time memory function. That capacitor can go bad if it is not supplied power for an extended period because the main battery drains in the camera or the battery is removed to store the camera. That’s why you have to set the date/time when you start the camera.
* and a tiny battery that feeds it when the power is off.
