Yesterday I tracked the K30 down to Kitamura camera. They only had the black one so I nearly missed it amongst all the Sonys. Have to say its a very nice looking camera. Very attractive design. The deep grip and texture of the grip are wonderful and it is one of the most comfortable cameras I have ever held and I have held most of them in the 5 years being a camera store junkie. What I liked most was the position of the front and back e-dials. They both fell straight under my index finger and thumb respectively. I found the front e-dial a little awkward to reach on the K5 but I think its higher on the K30 and positioned perfectly also the rear e-dial is positioned more to the left or centre of the camera and so falls straight under the thumb. As for the ISO button being on the the 4 way controller I found it fell straight under my thumb each of 20 times or so I went to change ISO with my eye to the viewfinder. Never missed once. As for the viewfinder it might be my imagination but it appears brighter and clearer than that of the K5. One thing is for sure is that the information displayed at the bottom of the viewfinder is crystal clear and sharp where as with the K5 it was slightly blurred. I found the shutter button to be very sensitive. Just a light touch to focus or escape from the menu and press a little more firmly and it fires. I have to say as well I really like that blue and green menu interface. So now I have the brochure and it is there with 18-135 at a good price waiting for a new home. I am very impressed with the feel and look of this camera.

I thought both the phase detect and contrast AF were slightly faster than the k5 but I didn't have a k5 with me in the same conditions as no store I can find carries both. Also we are talking about a well lit store here with nicely balanced lighting. Not really a big challenge. Didn't test tracking AF which is usually where Pentax cameras fall behind the opposition because nothing much was moving in the store. Initial impression with the 18-135 though was that in AFS both phase detect and contrast detect were extremely fast. Camera was a joy to hold and use.

Scroll down to a couple of filter shots and scroll down further to four shots taken of a dolphin at a dolphin show.
