First test shot, straight JPG from in-camera default settings for camera pretty much all in EXIF.

I'll try sort some more out tonight possibly (am going out for several hours now) or tomorrow.

I'm interested in the AF. Might be an indication of how things will go for the follow up to the K5. It would be nice to see the AF points smaller than they presently are.

Correct that Target sold K-r's. They may still be selling them. Costco sold them too. Also, Best Buy sold them, as well as K-5's, if I am not mistaken. However, all three of those retailers sold them via online only IIRC. I can imagine that their online only policies won't change. Orders were probably fulfilled directly from distributors, as opposed to stocked at store warehouses. Also, I seriously doubt that the full Pentax body and lens product lines will be available through any of those three retailers.
K-r's were in the Target stores here in NJ, although I never saw any lenses sold separately.

Given that and the speculation fueled somewhat by Ned Bunnell's statements that Pentax products would have greater availability in B&M stores nationally, dramatic statements such as, "Target will not have Pentax on stock ever, maybe not until within the next 5-10 years. Blame Pentax marketing strategy." help no one.

What is the best way to test this?

I've taken the day off so I made up a quick simple test for the center AF point. Camera was on tripod set, natural light. Between each shot I put my hand in front of the lens to make it rack completely out of focus and re-attempt.

125mm wide open for the kit 50-200mm hence vignette.

Setup on table

Viewfinder, so you can see how it was aligned - another crapo p&s shot

Haven't tested any others, hope it helps.

This is NOT helping me in my effort to wait till later this year. I really don't want to finance any of it.
That is one sharp camera. I hope it performs as well as it looks.

I think a lot of your comments are going to be qualitative vs your previous experiences - hence any general comments on how it feels vs your previous Pentax experience will help people!

Looking good for ISO 800. Can you shoot a video with your point & shoot camera showing the AF speeds of the K-30? Such as moving a cat close to you and another further away, and continually and rapidly lock focus + shoot between the two as fast as you can in relatively low-lighting? Aim at closer cat, once it beeps, snap real quick then move to further away cat then beep and snap real quick, move back, etc.

It's pretty terrible outside unfortunately, lots of rain and overcast weather. I did attempt a small autofocus test which I've uploaded. The distance to the cars as they moved wasn't enough to rack the focus much, a better test is required I think. Still results were pretty promising, compared to my K20D it was a lot better - not sure for K-5 users. Shot using the Tamron 18-55mm. Images are straight from in-cam JPG no editing cropping contrast adjust etc.

The others are uploading - will link the set once done

Full set once uploaded will be in here http://goo.gl/ClIxs

You shot with AF continuous? All the pictures seem to be right on focus!

Thanks for your posts!

So far, very encouraging pieces of information.

Where did you get the camera from?
PhotoWarehouse?

I've created a link to this thread at the KiwiPentaxians thread.

Too bad that the grip does not appear to be that well-suited for extended handling.
