what's wrong with your K-R+18-55?? Optically I guess it's almost the same with K30+18-135. Why not spend the $1200 to get something else? portable DA21, portable professional DC, water-proof DC (like TG-1), speakers, anything..

The 18-135 is a better optic than 18-55, more sharper and more focal length to use. For the K-r compared to the K-30, you get a weather-sealed body, one of and if not the best APS-C Sony exmor sensor used in the K-5. Better autofocusing, and more buttons on the body although not as much as a semi-pro, which allows easier transitioning, and the twin dials are extremely useful over the one dial on the K-r.

Nothing's "wrong" with the K-r. I simply would like to upgrade it. The K-30 has much better high ISO performance, improved image quality, better controls, focus peaking, improved AF (purportedly), weather sealing, etc, etc. I suppose I could just keep the K-r for the rest of my life.

I have no use for an additional camera. I have no use for speakers. Photography has become my passion, and I think I have the right to upgrade the tool I use if I so choose.

(LOL, or what LeDave said. )

And you get to keep the extra batteries from the K-r (doesn't the K-30 use the same model).

You are forgetting the better viewfinder in the K30, quite a major plus as well

I'm in the same boat with my trust K100D. I can't decide if I should switch from my Sigma 17-70 to the Pentax 18-135.
Decisions, decisions!

I've got the 18-135 and love it. The WR is absolutely a must with my K-5 and its reach is very nice for walking about. Do you have the 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO version of the Sigma? I've been looking at faster zooms lately and the 18-135 really only falls down in its aperture as its a 3.5-5.6. Perhaps not that much of a difference on the K-5 with its higher ISO ability but a bit more of one on the K-x.

even if the DA* 18-80ish will be available in no time, i am pretty sure it will be steep in terms of pricing, much more the weight and size assuming it will have constant large aperture. Moreover, you already have lots of lenses covering that FL (50,55,77,90). Settle with the 18-135.

That's the one. I've often thought about replacing it with the 16-45 or the 16-50 but couldn't do it. It's a very versatile lens. I was worried about the speed of the 18-135 too but I figure the greater sensitivity of the K30 over the K100 would more than cover the difference.

I never have used a K100 but as I understand it the ISO performance of the K5/K-01 and presumably the K-30 is significantly better. I think you'll find that 1600 is easily usable on a regular basis with up to 6400 doable.
