K-30 Expanded AF Flying Magpie

Here was an attempt this morning. Set to central AF point with 9 surrounding in pink, in cam JPG using the 50-200mm kit. Don't have K-5 to compare against but it was kicking the K20D's ass like usual haha.

Resized nothing else +0.7EV hence being slightly blown out.

Birds are always going to be a hard subject, and not one I have much experience in. It has missed one/two, but pretty snazzy overall - 1/2000th of sec might not be enough for ultimate sharpness with wings? possibly failed to keep the subject in the focal area for that first shot haha.

I have another set I will look into uploading soon.

I think for a larger subject this will definitely work well

Oh - I also noticed not long after that SR was off, from tripod focus adjust work yesterday but shutter speeds were too high to matter methinks.

No offence, nor do I want to start a rant but
I can't see what the K30 is doing differently than a K5 here on this sequence.
Please, enlighten me!

Very nice. Some are spot on even with the SR off. We've all forgotten after we've used mirror up, remote, etc to reset things. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with your new K-30.

No offense but that is kinda the point, isn't it? It's a K-r replacement, not a K-5 replacement. It's STARTING off at ~$850 and the K-5 started off at what (I can't recall seriously, I got mine late) but something like $1695? If it can do everything the K-5 can do, is WR, has better video, etc. and it's $850 at release - Wow.

The K-5 launched at $1599.95.

Good shots. I think shots 2, 4, 5, & 6 where the magpie is nowhere near the center focus point illustrates the Expanded AF's capabilities.

Looking at the images, it seems the camera was focusing ahead (back-focusing, in this case) of the subject, a hallmark of fully predictive tracking.

Looking at it that way, yes it is a darn good deal.
That was the reason behind my question.

Wow for a camera of that price.

Thanks. And stabilized at $1195, then at $1095, and I got mine last year for $995. Now it is being sold at the end of its life at $795. So, the K-30 starts at $850 and by Christmas will be what?

Haha You make a good point, I don't tend to go watch grassroots rugby though.

A second lot, was looking at Magpies when a seagull oddly flew overhead. Bit of an easier subject I think, however I still had a number of shots with it not in the central AF point which appear to have stayed focused. I haven't the foggiest how this compares to a K5, nor do I really care since the performance suits me just fine. No levels adjustment crop etc just resized to 1200.

This lot with the Sigma 135-400mm.

And so on K-30 Birds in flight - a set on Flickr
