My K100D is the loudest DSLR I've ever heard if that helps.
I second that, it is definitely louder than a K-x.

My K200D's shutter / mirror noise has never become a non-issue for me - it continues to be a concern in my concert photography and other quiet environments. So no, I don't expect the louder K-30 would ever become a non-issue either. But for most other situations, I can't see either being an issue - what would it matter?

You have co pared them side by side? I haven't, but have compared both to my K200D, and my impression is that while they might be similr, the K-x is probably liuder than the K100D.

I haven't had both in my hands at the same time, but have been shooting near someone with a K-x and mine was definitely more obnoxious.

My wife stopped a wedding with my K-x. The official and the couple all stopped and turned to look at whoever was making the loud clacking sounds.

I have a K100DS and a K-x in the house. I'll try both later, along with my K20, but from memory, there's no way a K100D is louder than a K-x.

Never heard anything but the K-x.

"What a beautiful noise..

Like the clickety-clack
Of a train on a track...

It's a beautiful noise
And it's a sound that I love
And it makes me feel good...".

The the anticipation of action to come, the moment you switch to continuous shooting. Then, the heart stopping moment you gently press the shutter button... Birds freeze in flight, players freeze in action... all heads turn your way, and you look up with a big smile, and that f*** you attitude clearly shining from your face, daring anybody to say something bad about your K-x....

It's almost better than sex!

EDIT: definitely not a camera for shy people!!

Between the K-x mirror noise and the screw drive, you could be forgiven for thinking there was someone using an old electric IBM typewriter nearby!

I just had a listen to K100D Super vs. K-x shutter activation. The K100DS sound is higher pitched, so it was hard to tell which was louder. I got out my Radio Shack SPL meter for an objective measurement; 76dB for the K100DS vs 78 dB for the K-x (Body cap in the mount, camera on a carpeted floor, meter 6" away) They both sound pretty loud, either could easily stop a wedding. Which unfortunately doesn't tell us a damn thing about the K-30. ;-)

Jindesu, who is a member of PentaxForums, has posted this comparison video of the mirror sounds produced by the K-x, K-30 and K-5. The K-5 puts the other two to shame.

He also has two other K-30 videos (RAW framerate and JPEG burst speed). You will find them in his YouTube account. I would link to them here, but I don't want to be responsible for this thread going off topic.

Thanks, this is almost exactly what I was looking for. I have a K-r, not a K-x, but hearing the K-30 before the K-5 was really informative. I hope the K3 is as quiet as the K-5.

Not a fair test. The volume on the K-5 was obviously turned down.

It was either that or the guy held his hand over the microphone.

I'm just kidding, of course. This fits with rawr's statement that the K-5's shutter/mirror sounds like a "butterfly landing."

I've had the K100, K-x and still have the K200..............the K200 is a dream sound compared to the others. If the K-30 was anyway near the K200 sound I would be happy. I've not heard the K-r so cannot comment on it. Shutter sound is important to me as I don't want attention brought to me while shooting. I used the K-x to shoot birds from my kitchen window and everytime it scared them away.

The funniest part of that is my first video had my hand covering the microphone on my recording iphone. So my first video, which got a few people looking at me weird, was scrapped and I had to redo it.

But yeah, in person, that k-5 is just lovely quiet. I am going to wait to see the k-5 replacement before deciding on the k-30...

In the video, it sounds like the k-30, while nowhere near as quiet as the K-5, is still a little bit quieter than the K-x. Was that your impression?
