My breakfast with Iselle

I live on Oahu in Hawai'i, where we briefly experienced some effects from the storm Iselle. Here we had very little damage, but the Big island particularly and Maui to a lesser extent were pounded. I decided to go for a drive to the south shore of the island Friday morning, which is where/when the remnants of the storm were to arrive. I ran into some hard rain and high winds, but the most noticeable effect was unusually large surf for that stretch of beaches and coastline. I was shooting mostly with the 55-300mm WR lens and a bit less with the 18-135mm WR, both on my K-30. I took the camera and lenses out in the rain to shoot some surfers and bodyboarders, but at first it was raining so hard that it was difficult to see through the viewfinder and the shots came out looking quite grainy and not well-focused. I didn't come up with anything I liked. When it settled down to a moderate rain and then after it stopped, I got some nice shots. Between the rain, the salt spray and the blowing sand, it was a great day for a weather-sealed camera and lenses, and it was nice being able to give them a bath when I got home. I ruined the UV filter on the 55-300mm somehow, though.

This is with the 18-135mm lens at an overlook on the way to the beach, before the hard rain arrived.

These next two are with the 55-300mm lens in a light rain.

And this is one I shot through the windshield between downpours, also with the 55-300mm, that I thought was well-suited to black and white.

I borrowed a K-50 with 18-55mm lens from Pentax over Xmas and these are just a few of the images I took. The first two are hand held looking out of the car whilst waiting for my wife, it was around 11.00pm, ridiculously cold and just starting to sleet.

The Second two are quite early in the morning looking into the park next to where I live. All shots are Jpeg straight from the camera.

This version has some artifacts visible due to the processing I used, so will probably redo it, but I am happy with the composition and B&W treatment.
