K30 and 55-300 at the Zoo

Just had a short while at the Vancouver Zoo. I found that, for my preference, I am going to up the exposure a little and the sharpness a notch or 2. Working with Raw and Lightroom 4 the images seem to be a little dark if you just use the default conversions. I did not get a chance to shoot the same shot in Raw and Jpg to see what the camera alone did to them. (forgot to do it)

Focus is much faster and more accurate from what I could tell in that short time.

Here is one from today with a slight increase in exposure and sharpness in Lightroom. Exported as 1400 wide jpg.

Nice shot! I find that with my K10 I need to increase my exposure about .7 of a stop and increase the contrast and sharpness a bit. I realize that you have a better sensor than my K10, but I do think that Pentax DSLRs do tend to under expose a bit.

I shall wash my mouth out with soap and water after I say that there's 'road trip' K-30 sample images using an 18-135 posted today on DPR. They look excellent to me.

This is my first ever "real camera", so I know absolutely nothing about photography, sorry . Hoping to improve though!

I don't think he was talking about your shots (which are just fine, btw).

Loving the 18-135mm lens.
I am still amazed how close it will focus.
My Pentax flash arrived and I was able to grab some quick shots with it.

One of my favorite subjects to shoot are dragonflies.
Here are my first dragonfly shots using the K-30.
Once again the close focus range of the 18-135mm WR shines as does the sharpness.

Hi.
Actually I had to add very little sharpening (I shoot raw only so some sharpening is always added).
Mostly I adjusted the microcontrast to make the wings and eyes appear more detailed and added vignetting to make the dragonfly stand out.
Also I used a flash as they were strongly backlit so I warmed up the white balance a bit (personal taste the AWB was accurate).
I could have probably shot jpegs and the in-camera sharpening would have been more than I added in post.
I have found the K30 with the 18-135mm sharp enough on its own. Previously I would have needed to add my Raynox 150 to a prime to get this type of image.
