Thanks Tom and tclausen. I'm pretty pleased with the Bluebird in flight shots, I got several decent ones. Nothing good enough to sell, which is my main goal, but still pretty decent. And definitely not easy to get. I tried dozens of times. To get these I sat in my Jeep parked about 15-20 feet away and waited. I knew they would be in and out of the box. I originally built the box for Bluebirds, and Chickadees took it over...the Bluebirds still fought over it for a couple of weeks and apparently gave up because the Chickadees raised little ones eventually.

I've always noticed uploads are a bit soft, not sure why but it's irritating. These are definitely sharper than they look here...

Here are a couple more of the Bluebird in flight shots, taken around the same time at the same Bluebird box. Nothing great, but still decent enpough I'm not against showing them off a bit.

The Male

The Female
Beautiful blue bird photos. What lens, exif?

Photo Heron - Thanks

New Englander - All taken with a K 30, and Vivitar 200mm M42 lens usually at f8. About 90% of the time I shoot ISO 200, occasionally ISO 400 if it's early AM and low light. These were all ISO 400, shutter speeds 1500 and 2000. These are posted in my gallery, EXIF is there. Or the parts that matter anyway...

Here's one I took a couple weeks ago in Zion Nat'l Park, Utah shortly after a rainshower had gone thru. I am noticing tho that some of my pics are "soft" on the left and right sides. Is it the lens?
Using 18-135 WR. This picture was taken f6.3 @160th. 200 iso. The picture IS softer on this post that in the computer. Does downloading to here soften them too?

I always do my own resolution reduction before posting online. A number of web sites that accept uploads will resize images on the fly to fit the maximum frame. Quick does not equate to good.

This is of course no guarantee that the web site's upload mechanism won't further compress your image to minimize storage requirements - and I have no idea if such additional compression happens on this site.

I find my shots always look softer after uploading here, or flickr if I link them here. Not sure why, but it happens every time.

Got a couple of new ones...

Mexican Hat

Flower taken at f1.4 with an older Pentax 50mm f1.4 (K series I think, 52mm filter ring instead of the usual 49mm)

Not as sharp as I would like to begin with, which is why I never shoot wide open. The Mexican Hat was the same lens at f4.

Bob White, also called Quail. Taken with my trusty Vivitar 200mm M42, from about a foot from minimum focusing distance, around 9 feet. THis bird let me get within 10 feet...ISO 100, flash used, I'm pretty pleased with the shots I got. Quail are very uncommon, between loss of habitat and fire ants they have been almost wiped out. (Ants get the little ones soon as they hatch). A neighbor tried to raise some in pens and a few got out, so it looks like we might have a couple of half wild ones now. I heard two males calling yesterday (this is a male, the female has yellow face markings) and called to them for 20 minutes. Had them answering me, but they never came into view. I knew where this one would be so I sat there and waited this morning...

Here's one I took today, I just got my k30 in the mail yesterday and thankfully the sun decided to come out so I was able to test it out a bit.
