Received mine today - Black K30 with the 18-135 lens........ Now if only the charger would charge quicker... I did order extra batteries and charger from a different vender and the plan was they might be here a day before the K30 and I would have a battery ready to go - they arrived today also... so I have two charges competeing to see who will win...

Mine came with a charged battery, at least enough to play with for a while. If you'd ordered the AA adaptor you'd have been able to shoot straight away!

If cost wasn't a factor we'd all be loaded up with star lenses and limiteds. Everyone has their own budget, preferences, and priorities.

I've been trying to save money by looking for good deals on used lenses here on the forums and on eBay. Most people seem to take very good care of their lenses so the used part doesn't bother me much, especially when there are usually detailed pics and descriptions included of the equipment for sale. For instance, Amazon sells the DA 55-300 for $370 and I was able to get mine for $250. Or you can check out old manual focus lenses that don't cost much. You can learn a lot from an old 50mm prime for very little. Pentax-A F/2.0's go for around $30 on eBay.
If I am looking for older lenses for my K-30 on Ebay (for example), I am confused as to what mount(s) I am looking for-would love some clarification. Newbie question....many thanks!

You should be able to take pictures with anything that's K-mount. There are variants such as KFA or KFA2. But basically if it starts with a K, it will work. There is some functionality that might or might not be present on some K-mount lenses.

1970's onwards K and M lenses are manual focus and manual exposure only and there's quite a few primes that are optically very good. K-lenses don't always have a K printed on them, just look for the letters SMC which refers to the coatings used. The PK mount may be mentioned in ads.

Later A-lenses are manual focus again but have a lever in the mount that allows auto exposure modes like Av, Tv, P. The PKA mount may be mentioned.

Then you're into newer F, FA, DA variants that do autofocus and auto exposure. DA lenses tend to be for crop sensors only but a few can manage FF sensor coverage I believe. DA* and LTDs are the best quality of the modern lenses.

All the above will work on the K-30, the early K and M ones require a menu change which can be left set (aperture ring....option) and a green button push for stop down metering to take place in M mode (and a fixed ISO!) before taking the shot.

Getting my Stormtrooper White K-30 today w/WR lens. Got a good deal (IMO) from BB of all places. They had them advertised as just the Kit version but model # is for the WR. Had them for $695.95. I called and inquired about getting a free bag and memory card but was told, to no surprise, that they didn't qualify. But the lady gave me 10% off, plus free shipping and expedited shipping for a total of $680 incl tax. I know I had to pay the sales tax but with that included it was still less than BH or Adorama. I had to do it that way to fit into my budget. Ordered Wed. and got notice it's to be delivered today. I may have to take the afternoon off from work to start to play w/it. IF for some reason I don't like it or it isn't the WR version, I can take it back to a store and not have to worry about wrapping it back up and shipping it back. So, just a thought for those who want to get it from a local B&M. Call, ask and you may be able to get the same or better deal. Will be calling BH for the Pentax extended warranty within a couple days. Can't wait for the weekend!!!
