Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I'm really debating whether to exchange mine or wait for the first firmware update and if that doesn't fix it, send it in. Coupled with the shutter-firing quirkiness in video mode that Randall S. from Pentax confirms is not normal behavior, I may be leaning toward the exchange... especially since that will take less time than sending it in later on and being without it for a couple of weeks.
I had similar lock up issues with my K-5. Not necessarily with the rear e-dial, but the camera would lock up completely. It was NOT a firmware issue with my K-5 as I immediately upgraded it to the latest version (1.13) as soon as I got the camera. One point; I found that my camera also stayed on after being turned off, but if I waited a while (usually no more than 5-6 seconds but once at least 15 seconds) the camera would eventually turn off. Once it turned on again it would work for a period of time before locking up again. I eventually sent it into CRIS and they replaced the main PCB/FPC. I also had a (probably unrelated) problem with the pop-up flash not working.

NaCl(took almost a month for Pentax to repair so you might want to go with a replacement instead)H2O

Just FYI, I sent an email to Pentax about this, along with my other issue of the shutter firing in video mode, hoping to get it passed along as a bug report. Randall S. replied, stating, "We have not received a notification from PENTAX Japan that this is a known issue in the K-30." So not sure if the report will go through. I mentioned that I could wait for a firmware fix, but he discouraged that, urging me to instead return the K-30 to them for repairs. So I believe I will go ahead and return it.

Interesting to hear - that response may just be a generic response until Pentax releases a fix for it.
