Thinking about buying the Pentax K-30

I have a Canon T2i, and have been thinking about buying the Pentax K-30 for the past 7 weeks. The reason I thought about switching is because Pentax has a weather sealed body. I went to Mexico this summer, and didn't take many pictures because it rained almost every day. I know the lens it comes with is not weather sealed, but I would buy one later. I also like the idea of having SR in the body.

I have been thinking about the lenses I would get in the future. The first one would be the 18-55 WR lens. I would want a wider lens that was WR, but you can't have it all. I also love taking night images, so I would like a fast lens. Is there a fast wide lens for Pentax cameras? Right now I have the Sigma 30mm, which I love, but it's still not wide enough.

Can you guys recommend me a lens? I'll post some pictures to see what type of pictures I take. I would really like the 16-45mm lens, and a fast lens. :/

What's your budget like? If anything, for a weather-sealed lens combo, I would recommend the 16-50 and 50-135 f2.8 from Pentax's DA* line but those will easily cost you 2 grand. A one set lens that does almost everything that I would recommend if you are on a budget is the 18-135 WR.

The DA*16-50, albeit costly, is a WR lens that is wider than the 18-55.

Right now I only have money for the Pentax K-30 and the kit lens. I would have to save up for future lenses. I did think about the Pentax DA* 16-50. I haven't read many good reviews about it compared to other cheaper lenses. Is the 16-50mm a good lens?

I want to get a DA*16-50. It isn't as sharp as the Sigma/Tamron 17-50, unfortunately, but it still produces very nice pictures. It's major flaw is if it's focus motor dies - but hopefully that's a thing of the past.

It is weather resistant, very well built, silent motor, and a pretty good lens regardless. It is a bit overpriced, but sometimes it's worth it to spend that extra.

If you don't care about WR, then the 16-45 is a very good budget lens. The Tamron/Sigma 17-50s are about 100-200 more (respectively) but perform better.

Do you care about primes or zooms? A preference for which?

Thank you for the reply.

I would get a prime if it was wide, and if it was around F/2 - 2.8.

The Pentax 15mm looks good too, but it's F/4. I don't if I would get sharp pictures because of shake, but that's why I want Pentax because of SR.

Are there any other wide primes for Pentax?

You shouldn't have any trouble getting sharp photos out of the DA15. Check the Lens Club subforum on this site and you'll see that he DA15 is very popular with its owners.

The DA21 f/3.2 is another wide option. Not super fast but it is small.

There are FA24 f/2 and FA20 f/2.8 lenses available but you'll have to find them on the used market, the FA20 in particular can be a hard one to find.

I've owned the DA*16-50 lens since 2009 and it has been my workhorse lens for weddings, sports, photojournalism, and everything else under the sun. No troubles with it failing for me so far even though I've beaten the crap out of it. I'd say it's very usable at f/2.8 and becomes competitive with prime lenses when you stop it down to the f/4 to f/5.6 range, where it really shines.

The DA 15 F4 is surprisingly good, because it's focal length allows for really slow shutter speeds (1/15s with Pentax SR), and it's light weight and size allows you to support the body even better. Plus, it's pretty good at F4, and the Pentax k-30 has phenomenal high ISO - a wonderful combination.

The DA 21 F3.2 isn't as sharp as some people would like it - that may be a turn off for you. It renders wonderfully and is a very good focal length (for me anyways), but I do not think you will like it if you pixel peep.

The FA 24 F2 is a very good lens - but as another user mentioned, can only be found on the used market. But it may be the lens you are looking for.

The DA 15mm looks like a great lens! :O I've been reading about it right now, and looking at the samples. It looks good!

I think if I were to get Pentax I would get the 16-45mm first, and then save up for the expensive lenses.

Thank you!
