Wow....this is interesting...

Received another reply from Metz:

Unfortunately, this is an issue and there is a firmware update being written to correct for it. I was only informed of this error by the designers in Germany today, and do not know at this time when said update will be ready.

Wow that is interesting and a quick change from they first replied. It only makes sense to have that info availabl,e since other makes have it.

Again thanks for posting. I will wait impatiently for the update.

Please keep us up to date on things. I am planning on getting the Metz 52. I think for the price it is a better flash and spending the extra money on the Pentax 540 is not worth it. Are there any benefits of buying the Pentax 540 over the Metz 52?

Don't get the wrong impression from my post, the 52 is a great flash and I love the pics I get with it. HSS and P-TTL are working fine but you know how it is, when you get something new, you usually try everything right out of the box to make sure it is working as advertised. The couple of things that I mentioned should not detract from the overall performance of this flash and if I had it to do again, I would make this same purchase, no question. Besides, I am confident in Metz to offer a FW upgrade that will take care of these small glitches that I noticed.

I agree with you on the 540. Seems to me to be overpriced for what it is. I never owned it but I got the 52 for $249 and it seems to match the specs of the 540 very closely at $150 less than the 540 is. I have heard some so so reviews on the 540 also. One thing that the 52 gives you that I thought was a little gimmicky at first is the touch screen. I actually think it is great now because it affords me the opportunity to change settings in dimly lit locations much easier than scrolling through button pushes would, and I dont know about everyone else but the lcd screens on a flash even back lit were extremely hard to read. Not so with the 52.

Bottom line, get the 52, you wont be disappointed.

I agree with Jim. I am very pleased with the 52. It provides consistent results with great features for the money. Nice thing is that its firmware can be upgraded by the user.

Anybody heard anything lately with respect to the 50 AF-1 and the K30? They replied to my email in December saying new firmware was in the works to fix the HSS incompatability issue, but it's been relatively quiet. They obviously got HSS to work with the 52, so I am guessing the 50 can be fixed too.
I guess if all else fails, you will see my unused 50 on the "for sale" forum and I'll have to pony up the extra cash for the 52.

I was last in contact with Metz in regard to the 50 AF-1 around November 1, 2012. At that time they indicated that they would email me once the firmware had been updated for the K-30. I have not heard from them since. I have been checking the Metz website on occasion. As of today the latest version is still Firmware V3.0 - released on July 27, 2012 and that is not compatible with the K-30. From the discussion here, the Metz 52 AF-1 is compatible with the K-30 and has more features for a moderate increase in price. It is now the flash route I am going pursue for my K-30.

That seems obvious what they want you to do.. forget your 50 and buy a 52.

We'll sit on this patch for the 50 to make it work on your K-30 for a year+ and hope you give up and buy a new 52.

The ability to patch the flash with new firmwares doesn't matter if they aren't releasing new firmwares.

Does anyone know if Metz has updated their firmware so that it works with the K-30?

No they have not. On their website you can check the firmware revision date. Last update was to fix the 50 AF-1 with the K-01 (which is now discontinued!)

They are suuuuuper slow with these revisions and no one can tell me it takes close to a year to create, test, and release a point release for the K-30. I emailed them asking for the status and they didn't even bother to respond.

It has to be on purpose and I'm rather disappointed with Metz in this regard.

I'm contemplating selling my 50 AF-1 with my K-x as a bundle and then using the money towards a different company's flash... with my new K-30.

When I looked in December the only flash other then Pentax that I could find that was listed as compatible with the K-30 was the Metz 52. Which I bought by the way and I love it!

Metz has updated their compatibility chart for February 2013 and it shows thumps up for the K30 for the Metz 52 af-1 and I also checked their website and they still have no updates available.

If you're referring to the PDF chart, then you've misread it. According to the chart it is in testing as well as a couple of other flashes.

I don't see any significant difference in this chart and the one I looked at dated Nov 2012 except that the Nov chart showed the 76 with SCA adapter as good to go with K-30 and the Feb does not . . .slip backwards or a copy error???

After rechecking the Jun 2013 compatibility list the 58 AF (1&2) is compatible with the K30 with v4 firmware upgrade
installed. Problem is there is no v4 firmware update that I can find. I have contacted Metz for further comment/help.
