New K30 Owner - Wait for new Sigma 18-250 zoom?

Long time listener, first time caller.
Traded in my Nikon D40 for a shiny white K30 body. Seemed silly spending an extra $100 on the white, but it got the greenlight from my wife - so it's all good. Very sharp. I just sent back the unopened 18-135 WR lens to B&H in favor of waiting for what Pentax may announce next week at Photokina, or for the new Sigma 18-250 zoom.

I emailed Sigma wondering if and when the newish 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM #883 will be available for the Pentax body? Marc emailed back stating, "Most likely the lens will be available in early October for the Pentax mount." This seems by most accounts to be a well regarded lens - at least in the Canon variety.

The weather resistance is not really a factor in my decision making process, and the 18-135 has such mixed reviews. I know zooms like these are a compromise, I'd just like the one that's executed the best. What do you think? I'm loving the reviews and feedback on the new Sigma and a month of waiting won't kill me. ??

I would personally recommend the 18-135mm, despite the mixed reviews. It takes great everyday pictures and has very fast AF.

To answer your question, the new lens is already available for pre-order at retailers, though it may be another month before it ships:
Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM for Pentax K Cameras

Our B&H rep personally confirmed with me that this lens is coming, though knowing Sigma's policy toward Pentax lenses,I wouldn't assume anything regarding the launch date of the lens at this point. Things can always change- another reason to get the shorter but cooler Pentax lens instead!

Pentax will announce a Tamron clone 18-270 super zoom at Photokina. But you will need a lens to shoot if you want to wait for that. Otherwise, a 18-55WR is pretty good lens and it is cheap.

I was waiting for the new Sigma with great expectation as it has identical design as an excellent (Tamron build) DA 18-250.
The new DA 18-270 looks pretty close to Tamron 18-270 , which has very good feedback from the other mounts users.
Now I want to replace one of mine DA18-250 with DA 18-270 and compare them.

DNRDNI, I would get used Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 Macro ( can get them for ~$200 in Australia) while you wait for new Sigma or new Pentax DA 18-270.
I have two of them and with two DA 18-250's ,those four are my the most often used lenses and they cover very well most of the situations.

If your first consideration is a 18-250, it is fair to say that you are looking for convenient IQ over ultimate IQ. I'm in the same camp. I prefer to play with composition and available lighting than PP.

However, what are you really trying to accomplish? If I could bin my Pentaxes for my wife's RX100, I would. There is no chance for the next 5 years.

Go for the 18-135. It is as natural a partner to the K-30 as Fred and Ginger.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like Pentax is releasing an 18-270. Looks a lot like the Tamron to me. No weather resistance either.
PENTAX - smc PENTAX DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM

So I think I'm down to either this lens or the Sigma possibly next month. Bit of unknown either way, but I'm still liking the general feedback on the Sigma. Same general range. Anyone have any thoughts on Pentax's "SDM" vs Tamron's "PZD" vs Sigma's "HSM" drives? Wonder if Tamron will eventually release their 18-270 in Pentax for less money and their 6yr warranty. Wonder what Pentax warranty is?

Anxious to get a lens on the camera and start capturing some moments.

I expect that the Pentax version uses the Tamron drive; no point in a new design with a new motor. It's called SDM, in my theory, because Tamron does not want PZD used on a lens that isn't represented as Tamron.

I don't know about comparative AF speed but the standard view over the last few years is that Sigma focused faster but Tamron hit the mark more often once focused. I chose a fast focus to shoot aircraft.

If its anything near the $800 predicted, no way!
The Tamron 18-250 has a good track record and 20mm extra is hardly noticeable.

Sigma 18-250 v Pentax 18-270

Just found this thread
I am looking at the same thing just got information from camera pro that the Sigma will be available early to mid Nov (in Oz) currently available In canon and nikon mount for $525 au and will come with a 5 year warrany. They have no timing on the release of the Pentax lens at present but that price and warranty will be hard to beat

In Australia? From CRK, the official Pentax and Sigma distributor in Oz?
That's a pleasant surprise. It would be nice if they decided to offer longer warranty terms on Pentax gear too.

If the Pentax were WR it would be compelling. Without WR it just looks overpriced.

The JPEG distortion correction and CA correction are nice to have for casual shooters, but will casual shooters be willing to spend so much on a lens?

It should be a $600 lens.

Hi just picked up a camera house magazine in it is a Sigma Australia add for the 18-250 and it has a 5 Year Australian manufactures warranty.
Also saw a full page add for the K30 and it was shown in their HOT NEW GEAR page, they also had a K5 in store for the first time ,
I agree it would be great if the 18-270 was a WR lens it would make the price a little more acceptable as it is it just dosn't look like good value.

Was hoping this lens would be available by now (18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM #883). Was initially told early October. Called Sigma USA, they had no ETA. I thought - someone has to know the ETA, right? So I emailed support in the UK, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Germany. All replied and stated sometime in late November, early December. So here's hoping. I ended up buying an 18-55 for $50 that someone was selling from their K30 kit. Figured that would get me by until the Sigma lens materializes...
