What Digital Camera review

Just saw the What Digital Camera.org review of medium priced DSLR cameras and they determined that the Pentax K-30 was best overall. Well worth a look....

meh, it's funny how when Pentax is labelled best people are like woot, but when it gets a average or poor rating people complain even if there are valid arguements. I don't even both with reviews, I rather go to my local camera shop with a memory card, take some pictures and test out how I like, I'm not interested in some random magazine review that may or may not be biased.

Thanks for the 'What Digital Camera' heads-up. It's an interesting Review. I see that the K30 they tested has 4 levels of JPEG quality -

(Attrib. 'What Digital Camera' site.)

The 4-Star "Premium" level for JPEG isn't shown on Pages 142 / 278 of my K30 Manual, and I can't find it in the camera....

Do the cameras for US and maybe EU, get a higher level of firmware than for the rest of the world, including Australia? If so - will the better level be available as a firmware upgrade? Might that include the full controls for Timer / Bracketing / SR, too?

Oddly enough in the pros and cons of that review they put the live view focusing speed (or lack thereof) in the cons. I find that odd because the swiftness of the contrast focusing was one of the things that impressed me about the K-30. But is that just a mistaken impression of mine that the contrast focusing actually performs very fast as these things go, especially for an SLR in that price range?

Actually there is one thing I don't like about the focusing in Live view on the K-30 as opposed to the K-r. On the K-r one can still use phase detect focusing (which momentarily drops the mirror to focus) but for some reason they dropped this functionality in the K-30. It is not something that I use/d that often on the K-r but there are times when it does indeed come in handy and I do miss it on the K-30.
