K-30 DNG Codec

A search on PF didn't show anything, and I thought people may not realise that Adobe have a Win7 32/64 bit codec to let you see DNG thumbnails in Windows Explorer.....

This is great! I was shooting in raw + jpg just so I can see the jpg thumbnails of the pictures I took. This will save me space.

There's also a PEF codec (for K-30 owners still with an older Pentax DSLR) on Microsoft's site that works in Win7 64 bit (Pentax's is only 32 bit)....
http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/1/F/A1F26927-3966-4E2E-A30A-DC78D34...Pack_amd64.msi

N.B. The amd bit doesn't mean it only works on AMD systems, mine is Intel based.

This is great in theory, but in reality it takes a looooong time for the thumbnails to load. My computer is not that slow (or is it? - Sony Vaio laptop, 2.13GHz, 4GB ram, Windows 7).

Anyway to speed up the appearance of the thumbnails?

It does take a few seconds but is infinitely better than having to use some other program just to view a RAW file. I have found this codec extremely useful! (I'd say it takes about 3 seconds for the thumbnails to start loading in a folder for me, on average.)

Gah, I think my computer is just a tad too slow. It's a nightmare trying to wade through all my holiday photos and having to wait . . . a . . . few . . . seconds . . . for each thumbnail to pop up.

This is still a useful codec, for sure, and I'm grateful to SteveB for sharing it, but I'll have to wait until a future computer update to really take advantage of it.

Weird. My PC shows the PEFs in a fraction of a second and it's a home built 4yr old one. Intel Core2Duo E7300 overclocked to 3.4GHz, 4Gb DDR2, Asus P5QL-e motherboard, Kaspersky IS 2013 for AV. Nowt special but well maintained. Check your AV program settings, perhaps it's doing a full scan or something.

Update..... further use showed the Adobe DNG codec to be really slow sometimes so after a try with the FastPictureViewer codec trial and finding it flakey, sometimes it worked fast, sometimes not at all, I've found a non-free one that works fast and reliably on Win7.64, it's Ardfry Imaging's DNG codec, trial at Downloads.
