Jerky Video

Hi, I was wondering if anyone experienced jerky video while still in camera. I noticed while shooting it this morning, it jerked. On playback, it certainly does. It was early morning, filming the tractor, with porch light and tractor light, in manual focus. I increased the EV to +3.
Not sure what happened, it never behaved this way before. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Deb

Is it the jello effect? Shutter roll? Maybe find a youtube video, see if its the same thing.
There are some ways to minimize that effect, but with modern DSLRs, as far as I know, its kind of inevitable in some situations.
Or does it look like lag/stuttering? How fast is your SD card?

Have you got the right shutter speed set? The wrong one will cause the video to look jerky

Did you have image stabilisation on?

Your bike video is jerky if I play the clip in Firefox having clicked on full screen mode, but if I download the 172Mb HD 30fps file it plays much smoother in VLC player. I noticed something similar with a downloaded file from one of the K-30 reviews. One day I'll look into this but I'm into stills more than video so it won't be for a while.

Oh yeah, codecs can also play a role, though I'm not sure they are the cause of this thing. Usually you will want to run the video through video software anyway, to reduce its size.

My thoughts exactly.

I know 25fps out of camera looks juddery but 30fps looks smooth enough on the few videos I've taken as long as I pan slowly like you're supposed to with CMOS sensors..

Against my better judgement, I spent a bit of time looking at K-30 video 'smoothness'. On my fairly ordinary 4yr old Win7.64 Core2Duo system, I found my usual default VLC player was useless on K-30 60fps videos, being very juddery, Microsoft Media Player was OK but I don't like using that for ancient reasons that escape me at present (probably it doesn't like certain videos), but the star was PotPlayer 64 bit version which is super smooth and has options missing from other players. It has no problems with 30fps or 25fps as I would expect. So the popular VLC, my usual default media player, will have to be replaced. Even if the codec is changed, the best one on the list available still judders a bit.

The only problem with all the above is that VLC sticks a plugin into Firefox. I'll look into that next.
Edit:- I've had enough of VLC, I've uninstalled it.
