K-30 Purchase Suggestions

I'm planning to pull the trigger on a K-30 for Christmas (I know, it's a long way off to be talking about). We budget for holiday shopping and if I add $25 a month (to what we already put away) I can do a body only purchase, for $45 a month extra I can do the body with the 18-55 WR lens. I have the 18-55 that came with my K-x. It's not my favorite lens, but should I consider buying the WR lens to take advantage of the WR body. I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, so maybe it's a no-brainer.

Would love to hear your input.

In my mind a major pentax selling point is weather sealing and durability. So i'd get the weather sealed lens. What does your budget look like if you factor in the sale of your current 18-55?

The price or the K-30 will be much lower by X-mass. I got a blue one with the 18--55mm kit lens NOT WR for $600 off amazon. I am sure there will be some used ones around more then. You can always buy the WR lens when you have extra money for it or when the price drop or you find a good used one.

If you are budgeting that far out I would plan on getting the 18-135WR. It has somewhat better IQ than the 18-55, much more focal length and WR. It is likely the k-30 will drop in price in 11 months. I got an 18-135 for my wife and she won't take it off her camera.

I'd go for the 18-135mm myself in your place.

I was all set on doing just that with my budget this tax season until I started lusting after something wide. I figure with my shooting habits, I'll skip the WR until next year and see if maybe they have something new out there thats sealed. If not, I'll grab the 18-135 then.

If I went with the WR 18-55 I would sell the one I have. I like the idea of stepping up to the 18-135 WR. I don't love the 18-55 anyway. Based on the price of the 18-135 I think I would wait till after the K-30 purchase. The lens looks awesome and would go to the top of my wish list. Truthfully, I could budget for it, but guilt keeps me from getting it. My wife is patient with my hobby purchases, I shouldn't push my luck.

Heck, by the time you buy I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't selling the 18-135mm kit in all sorts of wacky colors. It could be affordable a a kit by then.

You're going to wait until you can snag an orange K-30 to match your K-x, right? I thought I heard rumblings that they may expand the color availability outside Japan.

After I got my 'Metal Chocolate' (brown) K-r all the way from the UK, they started selling the leftover stock through Wal-Mart (online only). Grrrr.

I just got my K-30 with the 18-135mm kit and I have no buyer's remorse about paying the extra for the lens. One of the main reasons I went with Pentax was for the WR and a WR lens was only fitting. There aren't too many good deals on the 18-55 WR lens that I saw and it seems that just about everyone holds the 18-135 in good regards as a lens. Even if it isn't the best, it is a WR lens that has a decent reach that I would have no issues carrying around with me on a rainy Alaskan trip.

Ya, dmort, that's a good call. If nothing else I've set away money that can go in savings, best case I have some leverage for a sweet deal in late 2013. I think I like the idea of getting at least the body and going for the 18-135WR if there's a deal or buy separate later.

I used to own the 18-135 and I really liked it - I sort of regret selling it although I'm ultimately happier with my current kit (DA*). Also, if it was me - I'd go used. I've bought all my gear used and I have no regrets.

You might be able to find a good deal on a combo from Adorama or B and H come holidays. Maybe score a bundle including a memory card and a few other accessories.

Why not a used k5? Just another idea... Prices have really come down and I can only imagine that used prices will continue to drop.

Finally, if you search youtube for "k30 camerastoretv" you'll find a pretty strong review on the k30. Fun to watch.
