Thanks pentajazzz.
After looking around, i found that may be we can use the "D5000 battery grip" which already has the shutter release function through 2.5mm socket. This D5000 grip is compatible for D60, so I think we only need to mod the battery and use a 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable to connect from the grip to K30 socket.
Hope it can work.

any stock 2.5mm-2.5mm possibly has mirror pin-out...

if D5000 grip has connection/pin-out different from K30 it will not work.

I already bought one D5000 grip from ebay, now wait for its arrival and let see what we can do with it.
Obviously, the cable needs modding, i just hope that the button can do its job.

Hi, i have finished my grip. I found that the dummy battery from D5000 grip cannot fit in K30 battery compartment, so I wired to my AA battery adapter instead.
Use 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable to put the vertical button into work.

for Your attention my solution for "K30 grip"

donor is a K7 grip (from e-bay, 40 USD)

after removing position pins and interface connector is possible to attach grip at K30.

interface connector moved in to the groove....
to be continue...
I think this is the best solution for me because some of the k-7/k-5 grips (like this one: B020 Battery grip for PENTAX K-7 K7 D-SLR D-BG4 DBG4 | eBay) take both D-Li90 and AA batteries - both of which I have plenty as I also have a K-5 and a Canon compact respectively!

One question though: does the ridge around the top of the grip cause any fitting problems with the K-30, and did you have to file the lip down to make it fit?

You need to remove ridge from the front edge, there the camera is bigger than grip.
if not - camera will not attached well.
I was using sharp knife at first and file to smooth the finish. file only also possible, just little more work with.
You can see it at my pictures here

Many thanks - John

BTW - has anyone managed to SAFELY open a D-Li109 battery and removed the rechargeable cells, so that it could be connected to the external power supply in a grip? (I also have some spare generic D-Li109s and would be happy if I could modify one in this way).

I did it, please read carefully my posts.
You should adjust You're knife for only 2mm blade length.
sells it-selves has aluminium cases, so they are not much easy to puncture.
carefully cut plastic around and remove the sells.
to open plastic box only plastic tool MUST be used.

sells are still dangerous, so put it inside plastic bag.
better keep close to You some metal box and ability to open window.
NEVER using water!!! water +Lithium=fire/smoke

anybody, who trying to disassemble li-poly sells, doing it for his own response.

You can use the AA battery adapter instead of killing a D-Li109 battery.
I think it's quite cheap

Absolutely. I made an AC adapter out of a AA battery holder - works for the K-r, K-30 and K-50.
Build AC adapter for the Pentax K-r or K-30 - PentaxForums.com

You could even more easily use this technique to transfer power from batteries inside a do-it-yourself grip to the same trio of cameras.

Thanks, I think I can do that.

Roykin
Thanks and I could do that as I have several of them already, but, as others have said, the adaptors are quite fragile and can easily be damaged in use - so maybe not so reliable in the long run as a modified battery with the leads sealed in place into the case.

Also, I think I could use something like this Cable Exit Grommet | Maplin to replace the existing weatherproofing plug in the K-30 body as it is slightly bigger than the 6mm X 9mm aperture in the case, although I might have to trim it slightly on one short side to make it fit snugly - then at least some of the weatherproofing should be maintained.

BTW Just realised that it would not be a good idea to try to convert my existing Meikle K-5/K-7 grip because the interface connector tower is mounted into a raised part of the top of the grip, not held in-place by screws as in some other third-party grips and so I would have to cut that part of the moulding off. I will have to buy a grip where this is not an issue. Other people might need to note this.

John

The AA adapters are only fragile when left empty. As shown in my AC adapter post, I filled mine with silicone. You could easily insert and secure with hot-melt glue, wood dowels that are the same size as the AA batteries to provide internal support.
