The AA adapters are only fragile when left empty. As shown in my AC adapter post, I filled mine with silicone. You could easily insert and secure with hot-melt glue, wood dowels that are the same size as the AA batteries to provide internal support.
Me thinks it would be easier/quicker/smaller/tidier to do it by the converted battery route

just one thing - adapter has ONLY 2 contacts.
Li battery has 4 contacts, 1 of them is not used, and I was connect 3 (3 wire) of them and my camera see Li battery as it is inside the body.
it is needed for correct battery measurement and properly working power indicator.
also - when using Li-batt case, we have a lot of free space inside, for cable, for rubber insert of the body ets...

thne using adapter connected to Li-poly battery inside grip. camera see it as a 4xAA battery's and not measured power correctly.

The main reason i use the AA adaptor is because i'm using the cheap D60 grip. It has no electronic components inside. Basically, it's just a wire to wire connection. And i also found that, the mid point of the 3 contacts has no function on that grip (because it isn't connected to any point). So i think AA adaptor is suited for my works.

And also i'm not clever so wiring to aa adaptor is easier for me

BTW, i don't think if there is something can damage your adaptor when it's inside the battery compartment unless you want to separate your grip and your camera usually.

I will like to know. If you dont necessarily need the extra battery but need the shutter and af buttons.

Will this work without batteries in the grip?

Yes, the shutter and buttons will work without battery in the grip.

I just received pair D-Li90 marked as 2800mAh capacity and now my K-30 can be powered by D-Li90 and D-Li109 as well!

I'm in doubt about 2800mAh capacity, it possibly 1800mAh maximum, but I will know it soon exactly, after discharging with measuring equipment.

very interesting, K30 can easily work with batteries of K5??, I use DSTE Battery D-Li109 1400 mAh / 7.4 V/10, 4Wh and specioikacija claim that this is not true, I'd rather have any 800mAh but so little I paid for them.

K5 or K50000 - it does not matter.
2 cell of Li-Ion (7.4 V nominal and 8.4 maximum) - it does matter. but - it is not a K-30 battery chamber, it is GRIP battery chamber.

obtained previously DSTE D-Li109 was 1100 and 960 mAh (instead of 1400mAh)
this pair DSTE of D-Li90 one is 1360mAh and second one 13000mAy (instead of 2800 (!) mAh) but You are right - the price is to low. 8 USD for one, it is good enough.
BTW - this is a first cycle, Li-Ion battery need to cycle 2-3 times to obtain full capacity, usually 10-15% more, than 1st cycle.

BTW2 - original D-Li109 from Pentax shows also 960mAh capacity instead of 1050mAh...

Voltage output is what matters. And battery physical size if you want to fit inside. You can actually connect 7.4V power supply to battery port and use unlimited power from your socket while working in studio.

Thanks a lot everyone for these very good Ideas...

I'm just about to buy a grip on Amazon for D40/D60/D300, and i read the 5 pages of the topic, but didn't find a "complete" guide, and my english is not as good that it should be...

Can someone answer me like clearly and completely?

Thanks Pentax Friends !

Hey guys! Great work!

I'm thinking about making a Batterygrip just like you did. My only Question/concern:
roykin used an D5000 grip. did the D-Li109 fit in wihout any problems? or did you change any contacts?

best regards
Tobias

P.S.: Sorry for my bad english - I'm from Germany.

I want to re-start this Forum thread because of a couple meaningful updates:
#1. I saw this video --

And thought was exactly what am looking for.

I am quite happy with my K-30 and adding a grip I feel would just make it bulkier, heavier, less portable, more intimidating and besides I dont subscribe to the notion bigger is better. I dont need the additional shutter button (although an extra SD card slot would be nice), all I really want is enough juice so I can shoot for hours and never stop or pause for changing batteries. I could easily spend hours doing daytime street photography for example -- that calls for minimal, obtrusive gear and the rugged, waterproof K-30 is perfect. A grip would weight me down and easily attract the wrong kind of attention.

A rechargeable power-pack battery pack of 10-20,000 mHa (good for 8-12hrs stills shooting), about the size and weight of a bulky smartphone, fitting loosely in my jeans front pocket, and attached by a 1m thin and flexible black rubbery cable to a dummy battery inside my K-30 battery bay, that is easily disconnected close to the base of the camera, would be my ideal solution. That size of a powerpack is capable at the same time of being an emergency charger for my smartphone or phablet or tablet so thats double value and convenience there.
