Size of filter

Real dumb newb question I suspect.

My k30 with 18-55WR kit lens is about to arrive and I am looking to get a circular polarising filter for it. Probably Hoya. What size should I be looking for?

52mm is what you want. Congratulations on the K-30.

Yes 52mm. Get the multi coated version for better light transmission, not the el-cheapo uncoated version (it comes in a green case, made in Philippines)

A lot of people ge the Hoya Pro-1 version but I have seen that the fiter surface is very hard to clean greasy marks off. (not sure why some thing to do with the coating)

B&W also are excellent but heavier as the rings are brass.

Marumi are also supposed to be good.

I can vouch for the Marumi being good quality filters. Light transmission is excellent and cleaning them is SO much easier than the Hoya filters I have owned.

As other have already suggested, get the best you can afford, don't go spoiling a great set up for a few coppers.

I have always enjoyed Hoya Pro-1 filters but it is no joke that they are hard to clean. Most of the things you will see on one does not seem to transfer to the photograph, however. But, if you are like me, it will drive you absolutely insane and you will always be anticipating finding out your shot has been ruined by a soiled filter. My B+W filters seem easier to clean, but I still like my Hoyas a little more. Like others have said, get the best you can afford. A cheap filter is generally cheap for a reason. That being said, I have read (in Outdoor Photographer) that Pro Optic (from Adorama) filters are good and much cheaper.

So avoid Pro-1 and go for HD?

I have both, and while I would not say you should really avoid Pro1, since they are great filters, I prefer my HD polarizer over the Pro1 I purchased earlier. As others and myself have said, the Pro1 are just hard to clean. HDs are pricier.
