Windows Live Photo Gallery & RAW Files

Shot some pics in RAW and was disappointed that I couldn't quickly view them using Windows Live Photo Gallery. Did some online research and found a codec pack that added some additional file formats...still didn't work. No .dng listed below so I assume that MS just doesn't offer that format. Is there a way around this, so I can view these using Windows Photo Gallery? Figured out I could use the free SilkyPix software to convert the RAW files to jpegs but I really would like to preview them first and really fast with Windows.

Pentax (PEF formats only): *ist D, *ist DL, *ist DS, K10D, K20D, K100D, K100D Super, K110D, K200D, K-5, K-7, K-r, K-x

Get Faststone, you can view, edit and convert with it. And it's free.

I remember getting a dng codec for a windows computer once and it opened K-r's dng files. But it was very unwieldy, the load times were long and the photo could be only viewed, not edited, And unprocessed raw files don't look good. Its much better to get raw editor software. Like Faststone, Aperture, Raw Therapee,.. and some of the more expensive ones like Lightroom or Corel Aftershot Pro, Capture One,.. Silkypix..
If you plan on shooting raw, you will need one of these anyway. And the ones that have a catalog function allow quick viewing and searching of photos, too.

You can also get the codec from Adobe that allows DNG files to open in Windows.

That Adobe Codec is for Win 7 (and probably 8). Might not work on pre-Win7 machines.

It works on 8 i can comfirm and i believe it also works on Vista.
XP is a different base so that will probably not work but we are talking about 12 year old software now, that's pre-medevil times in computer terms

The only real fast codec for DNG is the non-free FastPictureViewer one. FastPictureViewer Codec Pack: PSD, CR2, NEF, DNG RAW codecs (and more) for Windows 8 Desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista and XP

If it works on Vista and Win7 the changes are great that it will work.
