DA or FA 70/77mm

For my K30 which lens DA 70mm or FA 77mm ?

I understand the FA is for full frame, but that is all I know

Go for the FA, it's sharper and has better bokeh.

Things in favor of the DA 70 include -- smaller size, faster auto focus, a little better flare resistance, is cheaper, has quick shift, and significantly less purple fringing. The FA 77 has faster aperture, sharper at similar apertures, and better bokeh -- the DA 70 has nice bokeh, but the FA 77 just has certain times when the rendering of out of focus areas just makes the image pop.

I have owned both (currently own the FA 77) and I don't know that I can tell you which one is better. Both are good and both have strengths and weaknesses.

FA 77 can be later used on a future digital FF or a Pentax SLR film camera ... the DA 70 cannot. J

If you're using a K-30 then the FA77 is really my only choice assuming you have the budget. If you're using a K-01 then the FA77 is still better from an optical standpoint but the DA70 focuses faster on the K-01.

Get the FA77.

FA77 would be the better choice

I've owned both, and sold the DA70. The FA77 is better.

It is true that the FA77 optics is made with fewer compromise than the DA70. Yet consider that FA is a quite old lens (made for film), while it still works very well on dSLR I prefer the DA70. The difference in IQ is there but very small, mostly in bokeh, also in corner sharpness, it so small that will be hardly noticed in the final picture.

I prefer the DA70 because size & quality is unique in this combination, also Quick-Shift is something I don't want to miss on any of my Pentax lenses. For the price difference you can get a fine manual 50mm.

It always bothers me when people describe the FA 77 as "old," since it was released in 2001. That's pretty new -- newer than an awful lot of lenses out there. I do feel like the skin could use improvement -- give it weather sealing and quick shift (aka the DFA 100 macro) and it would be about perfect, except for the purple fringing. Not sure what can be done about that, except fix it in post...

Both are really good and both will work well with your camera so the big difference is that the price is higher for the FA77 to get the things it may gain you, explained above and other places, while loosing a few you may find you like, also explained above and other places. I personally like the DA70 for what it deliverse, an exceptional picture in a great little package. Regarding the oft mentioned future proofing on FF benifit, maybe it is a benifit for some, but as I just described for the lenses, the price will be higher and with some benifit will come some loss. For example notice what a lot of the Q owners are doing they are further extending the telephoto crop factor benefit for wildlife use. I also suspect any FF that Pentax may bring out will offer a crop mode for the DA glass.

Thanks for all the advice, I have decided to buy the DA 70mm as its almost half the cost of the FA 77mm in the UK ,plus the fact I am a novice and I may not notice the difference.
