I don't know of anyone who is recommending the Eneloop XX for camera applications. AA batteries in any dSLR are always a compromise because the voltage is considerably lower than an appropriate proprietary battery. The problem with the XX batteries, and any pre-charged (hybrid) Ni-MH that has a capacity over 2000ah is that they lose maximum voltage very quickly in use even though 90% of the capacity remains in the battery. The Eneloop 1500s not only retain the higher voltage much longer, they are rated for 3x as many charging cycles (1500 - which is the reason for the designation, vs. only 500 cycles for the XX).

You are pretty well assured that any charger that can charge a single cell at a time is a smart charger. Some chargers such as the Maha C204F are dual cell and still a smart charger - knowing to reduce current as the battery gets close to full so as not to overcharge. If given the choice between slow charging and rapid charging, the battery will perform better and last longer taking the slow charge (16 hours). So, smart charging (microprocessor) is essential, single cell is better than dual cell charging, slow charge over rapid charge.

Thank you Jim,

yes, the "XX" was my fault when searching for Eneloop information. The number of battery types is too large and I am still confused, what exact type to use.
See the nice overview at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eneloop, which includes not only former Sanyo types, but also the most recent Panasonic types.
Which models in the good Wikipedia comparison table are now recommended for Pentax K-30? Has anyone experience with the new 2013 models?

Peter
