The U1 and U2 forget raw settings. I like to shoot in raw and have a copy in a low res jpeg image. This setting is remembered in Auto but U1 and U2 need to be set each time I use the camera. This is highly inconvenient and I have lost valuable images which have not been taken in raw.

U1 and U2 are presets defined by you. I think you need to explicity save changes to these presets in the Menu. They should remember your settings then.
