I have a FM2n also--and I hang onto it b/c for winter backpacking I trust it more than any other.

I also have spotmatics and a K1000--the K series are IMO the nicest handling--but I prefer a slightly larger camera (for this reason I absolutely love the K20d).

Actually you may want to consider the K20d. When I went digital I had nikon and pentax systems--but the handling/feel of the pentax K20d made the biggest difference. Instead of a come down from film cameras it actually handled better than any SLR/DSLR camera I ever held!

Highly considered. I'll think on it, keeping them couldn't hurt, though it doesn't get too cold here in southern Cali.

Thanks everyone! I learn a lot from this forum.

With the $499 for the K-30 with WR 18-55 deal going on at Hunt's, you would be hard pressed to find even an older used DSLR for that good of a deal. I was watching older DSLR prices until I saw that deal, and was not impressed at all with what I could get fro what I waswilling to spend.

Well, I'm approaching it from the other way around as I await delivery from Hunt's on the 18-55 WR deal. My serious camera is the K-01, Q is for fun, K20D probably will get sold, and an old Canon (20D) is situational for sports use mostly.

I thought long and hard between the K5 and K30, but experience with the K-01 moved me strongly in the direction of the K-30 related to the aspects of live view in general and focus peaking in particular. What I have come away with lately, having shot the Q and K-01 a lot lately and some with the K20D, is that there's a lot to be said for retaining a familiar layout. None of the three are similar in layout - and that slows me down. The K-30 and K-01 have a fairly similar layout (but not exact, of course) while the K5 would be yet another layout to learn.

The arguments for the K-01 as a back up - at least from my perspective - are significant. Certainly the K-30 is more versatile and will be my #1 body. However, in several situations the K-01 will be a clear choice for stealth work (smaller size, quiet shutter), and video (better battery, better mic set up). The K-01 might get the nod for some longer outings when batteries might be a concern (although I always keep plenty of spare power).
