Pentax K30 + 16-45

Hello everyone,

I just took the plunge and purchased a new K-30 , body only. It's in the mail, can't wait....
It was about time to upgrade from my trusty K10. To be honest, It did not get much use lately as I was not too motivated.
I trust there will be a significant improvement in IQ ...

My most used lens with the K10 is my DA 16-45.

Is there anyone using the same combination ( ie : k30+16-45 ).
I would love to see some pictures before I can do take my own....

Thank you!

Sounds good -- I'll try to get some; I just got a white K-30 thought I swapped it for my daughter's K-x. She uses her white kit lens, and I use the 16-45 on the K-x. I plan to try both lenses on the K-30 to see how they do. Don't know if I can get to it before your '30 arrives...

Here you go... I confirmed that the 16-45 out resolves the kit lens wide open, such as it is. But not necessarily in a significant way in most cases. The 16-45 focuses fast and seems accurate.

The K-30 is also a delight with manual focus lenses, the center dot is really a great help.

As a longtime 16-45 user who has used the lens a great deal on the K-01 (same sensor as the K-30), I can confirm it works well. The K-30 outfit (with DA 18-55 WR lens as kit) arrived yesterday. First impressions are that the kit lens is a lot smaller (given a 52mm vs. 67mm ring size difference I should have known!). The WR is a better build by a good margin (again a surprise) - tighter and a bit smoother. On the other hand, it is clear that macro (and pretty much any close focusing at maximum zoom) is much better on the 16-45; that lens is probably the best zoom macro I've ever used - although that isn't saying much.

It would take me some time to determine the differences in image quality at other settings - I don't see an immediate major difference at first blush other than the nearly full stop speed advantage on the long end.

Thank you Nesster !
Great colors on those shots.
My k30 arrived today. Charging the battery....will post some of mine with the 16-45 over the week end.
Your shots look promising.
I love the sensor on this cam!

Waiting to see results, that battery charge time is always a tough one.

I did a quick compare between the white kit lens that came with our white K-x and the 16-45, just a quick informal test wide open... My daughter's lens had some smudges on the front element, I discovered later... and I repeated the test with the K-x (I haven't looked at those yet) to see if the results are similar.

Anyway, A is one lens and B is the other

(the large size on flickr is 100% in case anyone wants to peep)

Another nice thing with the K-30, you can make a DNG from the photo you just took with a push of a button. I did so with this pic, 16-45

My 16-45mm is sharper than either of my 18-55's, and has better colour and contrast, so I guess that would make B the 16-45mm.

Very timely post for me...I spent a day shooting with the 18-55 yesterday. I have no issues with its IQ but man do I miss having something wider than 18mm. That's why I am thinking about this lens.

Hmmm, A is 16-45 and B is the kit.

That doesn't sound good for your 16-45mm. I believe it's pretty universally agreed that a 16-45 beats the kit lens for colour, contrast and resolution.

Hmm, in the first pair at 28mm (where both lenses are f/4) the 16-45 seems to have better color and resolution at least. At 45mm the two are more even, but then the kit is at f/5.6. This goes to show that past a certain point, lens quality doesn't determine photo quality.... but at a very much higher level the lens quality again makes a difference. I.e. I'd be happy with either lens, but my primes are in the next category.

The jpegs from the 16-45 are uniformly larger than those from the kit, and this repeated with the K-x.

So here is one of my trial shots with my K30 + 16-45 .
So long I love the handlingof this camera. Really. Still more to discover.
This pic is taken from the Champlain bridge in Montreal, overlooking the city. It shows how convenient it is to get to Montreal ( by rail, road, boat ....just couldn't wait for a plane to show...)
