Pentax K-50 computer/usb headaches...

I haven't installed the photo editing software that came with my K50 yet, so maybe thats the problem (currently my optical drive is fried), but on two different computers I've tried to hook the usb cable to pull some files of the camera and I keep getting the same result. The computer tells me I need to format my card....no biggie...i'll do that, as nothing I had on the camera was that special. So I do that, and then when I turn the camera back on, the camera tells me my card isn't formatted..so I format from the camera...and this cycle repeats without ever being able to get an image off of my card via the usb. Any help?

I did a test with my K-50 and encountered no problems.

The photo editing software is not needed for copying files to your PC.
Important: Your memory card must have been formatted in the camera, not on your PC.
After formatting the card take some photo's for a test.

Connect to PC.
1) The camera must be off.
2) Connect the USB cable between camera and PC.
3) Switch the camera on.
4) The PC (Windows) is showing "Found new hardware. Disk drive".
5) Look in Windows Explorer, you will see an extra drive with name 'K-50'.
6) Copy files from the 'K-50' drive to your hard disk.

Disconnect from PC.
1) Left click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon on the task bar (bottom of screen)
2) Left click the camera drive that is shown (for drive letter see Win Explorer).
3) The PC says: "Safe to remove hardware ...".
4) Remove the USB cable.
5) Switch off the camera.

This was tested on a Windows XP PC.
I have seen threads with problems in Win 8 though for other camera's.
Hope this helps.

Just simplify the problem by using a usb card reader.

Your USB commection must be set to MSC, not PTP.
See manual 'Setting the USB Connection Mode'

1) Menu Tools 2 | Interface options | Select USB Connection.
2) Select MSC.
3) Select the MENU button twice.
