New Pentax K 30 for 550$(18-55MM DAL)

HI,
I am looking to purchase a new Pentax K 30 with 18-55MM lens. I happen to hear more about this K-30 DSLR and its features, worth the price in comparison to its competitors spec.

I already have Nikon D3100+18-55 MM & 55-300MM purchased in late 2011.

Always had an thought to buy an advanced camera like D7100/7000 from then on.

I happen to see the K-30 and its features like dial user Settings (U1 & U2) memory bank and much more advanced things for 2/3 or quarter the price of Nikon.

(In pentax U1 & U2 mode will work like Nikon memory bank U1 & u2 mode?

Could any please advice me, is it worth to change to Pentax K-30 or go with NikonD7100/7000.

Current market price
D7000 - 700$(body only)
D7100 - 1050$(body only)
K-30 - 500$ (body only)

And photography is my hobby only!

Looking for your kind advice.

Thanks in Advance .

Logitech

The K-30 is certainly a more feature rich camera than the D3100, but have you outgrown it yet? Maybe you could just pick up the Nikon 35mm/1.8 for ~$200. That's a nice normal prime that will give you low light ability. Pentax makes a really good camera, but it's not going to make you a better photographer. What you have is good enough to learn with. If you don't have an external flash the Yonguo 565 or 568ex are good, cheap, options.

Good Morning and Welcome to the Forum!!

I have a few questions first, along the thinking of kenafein in the previous post.
  • What do you shoot (landscapes, portraits, sports, wildlife (birding, ...), macro (flowers, bugs, ...), architecture, night/low light, underwater, ... etc)?
  • What do you do that the 3100 does not currently do for you?
  • Why are you thinking to possibly upgrade to the 7x00?
  • What feature of the K30 interests you the most and why (weather sealing, in body stabilization, ... etc.)?
  • Where do you want to go with your photography or be in 5 years?
  • Regardless of camera, what type of lenses (telephoto, macro, tilt/shift, ... etc), accessories (high speed flash, ... etc.) interests you the most?
This is not to dis-sway you at all. Just want to make sure that the features of Pentax fit you, so that you will not become dis-satisfied.

D3100 to K30 is a fairly lateral move with a gain of weatherproofing. A K30 is also much heavier. I personally find nikon jpegs to be more pleasing but you might like pentax's better. As stated a lens purchase will get you better results, the 35mm 1.8 is awesome as is the Tamron 17-50 2.8.

Don't sell it too short, I think it's a significantly better camera, but still maybe not worth the upgrade. The front dial, improved sensor, focus peaking, improved FPS, Pentaprism, IBIS, etc are all worthwhile. The camera compares very favorably to the higher end D7000 that the OP was considering. Still, the D3100 is still a good camera and lenses and flash are probably more important than a body upgrade, depending on how the OP shoots.

BE CAREFUL!,, I purchased a "NEW" k-30 kit from Best Buy online for $550 via BeachCamera. The dealer sweared to me on the phone that it came directly from Pentax. The camera arrived with a 2400 shutter count, someone elses name in the copywrite info, battery charge issues and front focusing issues beyond -10

BH, Adorama and Amazon are all safe bets.

Hi All,
Thank you so much for your kind suggestions and response pentax forums members. Based on the all the suggestions, I will stay with D3100 and buy a 35 MM lens for now ... will buy the K50 at later point of time, when the price comes down reasonable as like K 30 now.

Thanks Again.
