K50

I have the k50 and can't figure out why when I shoot in Auto mode with the flash and close to 5.6 the shutter speed changes to .5 or .6 and the shutter is slow to release. I thought the camera would be locked into a speed of 30 or 60 when using a flash.

The default behavior in full auto mode is to use the flash as a fill instead of the main light source, this obviously doesn't work well in all cases. Just use manual mode and set the shutter speed to something reasonable instead.

Thanks. Is this a normal occurrence? I have some success in Program mode. The speed locks in at about 40.

I believe so. There is really no reason to be in full auto mode with P-TTL flash, since even in manual mode the flash system automatically makes the flash output match the ISO and aperture you selected (as long as it has enough power) and shutter speed is irrelevant to the flash exposure anyway.

When I got my camera i also got a 32G Sony SD card and was getting a memory error. My dealer told me it won't take 32G. I spoke to Pentax and they told me it won't take a 32G Sony SD but will work with other 32G SDs. Do you know anything about this?

I've never tried a Sony branded card with a Pentax body. Did you try formatting the card in the camera? Does the card work in other devices? The K-50 should definitely be able to take a 32gb SDHC card.

Officially Pentax states compatibility with Sandisk, Toshiba and Panasonic cards. That doesn't mean others won't work, but they are not guaranteed to work, so their response isn't surprising. I use a mix of Sandisk and Kingston cards without a problem. Sony only states compatibility with their own products, so they aren't much help either.

Sony cards seem to have given problems on Pentax cameras for a long time. You can search for Sony and you will get some hits.

With regards to flash; the behaviour is normal. When you switch to Av, you might even be more puzzled My experience is that it takes the focal length of the lens into account as well; but in different ways for different cameras. As elliot said, manual is the safest approach to flash.

I also have a K10 and when I pop up the flash even in Auto mode it locks the shutter into 60. Why the difference between the cameras?
